Rear diff oil change

In readiness for winter I want to drop the diff cover plate and replace the rear diff oil as sure it has been therefore the entire 146k miles I have owned car.

What is the best sealant to seal up the cover plate with ?

check the maint guides, no need to remove the plate, iirc you can dril through one of the bottom bolt holes, use that as a drain, then the bolt acts as a plug.

Or you could use a oil extractor

Sounds a strange method..."drilling through a bottom bolt"  :o..would that really get all the old crap out of the diff and is that not prone to some issues if the drilling went "pete tong "  :-X...Usefull if somebody has a link to this method or has first hand experience with this  :y

Oil extractor is a fair call but surely no big effort removing plate and would have thought the cost of some form of gasket from a tube !! :D ;D would be less than going out to buy an oil extractor.

But which one? Now if you'd said loctite 598, or 5910. Or a thread lock for the bolts...

Main reason for my question was I had read the full guide several times and am fully aware of how the job should be done,my concern was the type of sealant required.

Mark refers to the use of Loctite 598,but that doesn,t appears to be available from normal factors so what would be a  suitable alternative  ;)

Halfrauds do a loctite sealent ( gray )  Sorry, can't remember the number or if you have any of the black stuff for cam covers, that will do the job  :y

Stuff drilling holes, just remove the end plate (with a bucket underneath the diff  ;D ;D )
Drain it out and refill via plug on the side of diff  :y

I used a ptfe additive and just over a litre of oil.
Also if you have a old iceing shringe about, use that because its a bitch to get the bottle in there  ;)

It would be handy if someone has a picky of one of these "drilled" bolts so it could be added it to the "how too"   :y

Loctite 598 is a black RTV sealant, it memory serves, so essentially the same as the black cam cover gasket sealant.

598 is/was dark grey.

I would be looking to use the oil cooler sealant for this job as its what is used on the sump assemblies.
