2.2 petrol engine "tapping" can anyone help?
« on: 04 December 2011, 20:29:41 »

Hello, I've just purchased a 2.2 petrol manual gearbox 02 plate estate, since I bought it I've covered around 300 miles. Today I noticed a light "tapping" on tickover, and sometimes further up the rev range. The noise dissapears just off tickover.  Does this engine suffer from "lazy" hydraulic tappets? Does anyone know if this is common on the 2.2 engine?
The car has done 56k miles, full service history, 10w 40 fully synthetic oil and filter change every 4k miles and drives perfectly. Any help would be appreciated before it goes in to have surgery, I need this sorting as this sort of thing drives me up the wall.

Thanks, Tony

are you sure the oil has been changed some sellers will say anything to get a sale. I would change it again to be on the safe side then see how it sounds

Another thing that can sound like tappets tapping is the exhaust manifold gasket leaking due to broken studs.  That does seem to be a fairly common occurrence on the 4-pots, so probably worth a listen on that side of the engine, and removal of the heatshield to eyeball studs/nuts.

At the mileage you quote, and with the servicing that has been done, it really shouldn't be anything to do with the followers/tappets.  But it may be that it has such low mileage because it has stood unused for longish periods, or driven only short journeys, which doesn't do engines many favours.

Have the cambelt, pulleys and water pump been changed ?. They should be done every 40K miles. My water pump shaft broke about 55K after being changed, the belt came off and several valves got bent, meaning head off to fix. :'(

Thanks, surprising what you remember when you have your memory jogged.... I had a 2.0 Tourer about 12 years ago and guess what, it developed a ticking noise not at all dissimilar to the one I've got now, front 2 exhaust manifold bolts had gone.... so that'll be the 1st job Monday morning. Cam belt, pulleys and pump were done 22k miles ago, oil is like a mountain stream...clear, as opposed to being full of dead sheep! Thanks again.

When you remove the heat shield you may also find you have a cracked exhaust manifold, this is a known issue with the 2.2, Check that the manifold gasket is the the correct uprated GM multi layer steel one.   :y

Also drive a 2.2 and to have suffered with the tap tap noise i first thought it was the lifters so treated with wyns after an oil change no joy so removed the heat shield  only to find it was cracked. Had this welded but still no joy then after a proper look found that i have the first stud on the underside of the manifold had completely come out along with the insert. After asking about having it repaired told it would be ok providing all the other studs came out freely not some thing i wish to ponder on so i just put up with it, soon goes once engine is warm so for now at least it can stay.

PS if any OOF members are up for having a go at repairing it for me say maybe next summer i am more than willing to cover the cost.  :y :y :y

Thanks again for all the info., confirmed as exhaust manifold stud missing as of yesterday, it goes in for paint on the rear bumper today and Thursday for the exhaust issue, I'll make sure it gets the proper GM manifold gasket put on.
