Hi markspark
Strongly suspect that it is the tensioner bearing that you are hearing. Does the belt squeal on full steering lock? On mine, it would squeal on full lock, but made no sounds under normal driving. Tensioner can just about be replaced without removing anything else, but it is a tight fit. My old one had quite a bit of wear both in the bearing and in resistance to compression although the tension of the belt appeared OK with the worn out tensioner. I guess the only way to prove it is to release the tension of the tensioner by unscrewing the retaining bolt and giving all the pulleys a once over. If you do decide to replace it two things to bear in mind.
1) have a careful look at the new tensioner and identify the cast in (22mm?) nut on the body of the tensioner which is the means of getting the tensioner into a position where you can replace the belt (creating sufficient slack)
2) following an earlier crankshaft pulley failure, my tensioner fell off on start up due to its single fixing bolt shearing off about a week of use. I would strongly recommend that this bolt is replaced if disturbed.
Hope my experiences help.
