classic lift pump problem by the sound of it, is it easier to start with a ful tank or at least over a quarter?
do a search on here lift pump blockage is well known! :y

Just went outside in the pouring rain, turned the key and it jumped into life.
Could it be something to do with the frosty weather.
Any ideas?

I'm inclined to suggest changing the glow plugs. ;)

I've fitted NGK's to the TDs that I maintain with no problems. Beru are also fine.
IIRC they were around 7 quid each.

Do you want me to get a price for them tomorrow?

Whatever you decide, do not fit the cheapo plugs that you find advertised on certain internet sites. >:(

bloody car.

bought glow plugs. all set to replace.
had battery tested and looks like it could be that so took plugs back and got battery.
tried it and nothing. wont start.
took top plactic cover off and found a fuel line perrished so replaced and ............ still wont start
could it be anything else but glow plugs because it wont start at all now. >:(

As you've now got a brand-new battery, (so the engine's positively whizzing over), slacken one of the injector pipes at the injector end.
Get someone in the car, and try starting it, whilst you stand well back. You should see good squirts of fuel where you've slackened the injector pipe nut, as the engine's being cranked over.
