Suspension problem
« on: 19 December 2011, 12:07:00 »

Went over a pothole today, and was then met with a nasty clunk and rattling from the back of the car.

Nothing to see underneath...

Checked the shock mounting points, and the passenger side rear upper shock mount was dented :y

The amount of shock absorber poking though seems far too much..

other side for comparrison

Inside I have these parts,

underneath I have this,

which looking on the guides here, and EPC, I dont seem to be missing anything  ???

Whats gone wrong?  how do I fix it?
formost in my mind is the shock 'threaded bar part' has pulled out from the main shock and is now too long?  is this even possible?

Shocks are 18 months old, genuine GM MV6 ones.

HELP!!!!

(ive had a clunk, I think from the front of the car for some time, which may, or may not be related)

looks like its missing a collar off the lower part that should stop it pushing up through the rubber mount

Have you looked at the aperture in the floor James,to see if the shock has been pushed up through it ?

from your pics of bits i can only see one of the 2 no6 washers, the bottom one is missing allowing the top of strut to push up through the rubber

yes, top of 8/9 sits snugglly in the opening....but with loads of 'bar' not just the threaded end.

Hmmmmm maybe 6 I am missing, should that sit at the very start of the threaded section?  That looks like it could be it?

Whoever changed the shock at some point has ommited the big washer, and hitting a big bump has allowed the rubber bush to be pushed up into the inside of the car.
Worth having a look at the order of assembly on the other side ?

id be checking that the other side is fitted too, or you could find that you end up with same problem in near future
