Loose wheel nut's (Embarrassed)

Recently posted a question about front wheel bearing and its replacement, well after buying the part and Robg kindly offering to fit it he found out that the wheel bearing was fine and in fact the wheel nuts had some how worked there way loose one had even escaped. I did not check them as visually they looked fine. A well wheel know next time thanks Rob for pointing it out i guess my excuse is its Xmas time a time for fools   :y :y

Might pay to check that the holes haven't worn out of shape on the bolt tapers.   :y

All 4 were hanging by about 10mm of thread :o God knows where the fifth went

I've often thought of getting a cover like the techs have at work - rubber thing goes over the steering wheel, says something along the lines of "DEFECTIVE VEHICLE, DON'T DRIVE IT, YOU MUPPET". Purely because once, and only once, I went to drive off without tightening the wheelnuts. I'm fastidious about it now.

That makes a good case for ensuring that you always use a torque wrench on wheelnuts.

Going back into the cellar for it, looking up the setting and actually using it works for me!

Absolutely. Since I bought the TW it's probably my most used tool. Apart form the hamme.r

Plenty of tyrefitting muppets, however, use the windy gun, then set the torque wrench, apply to wheelnut, and fancy that, it clicks...

I torqued my wheels on once and was shocked at how easy they felt from
How I was doing them before; so now I have my own little system...

1)torque them on for what they 'should' be,
2)for my own peace of mind, I wind em up with a knuckle bar that extra little heave- usually equates to about a quarter of a turn.

I mean let's face it it's not like they're done up 'airgun tight' they're just on a bit tighter than required.. Not had a wheel fall off yet...  ;D

I could have done with one of those rubber things on my steering wheel when I drove away from a petrol station in Spain with the pump nozzle still in the petrol tank,Dragging a petrol pump behind the car makes me double check now. I must add that it was the pump attendant that left the nozzle in. Just a thought for christmas.

To put it another way, they should be undoable by the average waiflike woman, using only the wheelbrace supplied with the car...

In my plooky youth I was taught to tighten then recheck all nuts/fastenings at least once in a known and repetitive order so that it becomes second nature.

It is still embedded in my mind the picture of this one particularly greasy old engineer sneering at me with glint in his eye and spittle dripping lips, saying that you should always chase your nuts.....   :o   ;D
