How  do i convince the hubby?
« on: 16 March 2008, 10:23:50 »

to let me convert my motor to LPG?

he likes the idea and is up for it but is a bit slow in giving me the go ahead. All because i said that i would payfor it using my overdraft. Whats wrong with that?

This coversion would be done with the help from the master (as i call him) James.

The kit i am looking at is :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330219252922&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=014
they are only round the corner from me too.

the cost of this kit would be recouped by the savings in fuel on the mileage we have planned this year. the only thing we wont have covered is price of the tank. (hubby wants a spare wheel one, i agree) oh and James labour charge  ;D ;D ;D ;D

so ok how do i convince my hubby or do i just do it?

A woman waiting for her hubby's permission before spending mony - Marie -- you are a RARE find!!

That said -- I would go ahead and do it -- you can always fall back on the "I thought you had said yes" -- seeing as he is up for it ..reeeeaally ;)

Clear off some more overdraft & have the conversion done at a later date, but if you have it done now you'll start saving right away, which means the overdraft will be paid off quicker, but you'll have the extra on top don't forget.
My mate has his own haulage business & he told me the other day that his business account's overdrawn by £10,000 :o :o :o :o & his personal account is overdrawn too  :o :o :o :o
I said have you any funds at all, he said not really  :-[
I asked him if he wanted to borrow some & he said no, because that just means another debt. He can leave paying me back for as long as is needed, but he declined.
Sensible i suppose, but he did say that he got himself in it & he'll get outa it.

How much will the LPG save against interest you'll pay on the conversion cost? Might make more sense to wait. Depends...

That's a good kit. Same as we fitted to James' car. I wouldn't have any worries about the practical side of converting it. Will be a piece of cake on a 4-pot.

its not that big of an overdraft....

£1500 intotal and i am only £400 in it. cost of conversion @£600

The saving in fuel on planed journys alone this year (well until aug) would be@ £380.

most of these journies are cos jase is being drafted away from home and his weekend mileage will work out to be 160miles. he might do this journy up to 15 times between may and aug.

im torn what do i do?

i pay the interest rate monthly.

when i had my overdraft maxed out i was paying @ £13-15 per month in interest.

its not that bad really cheep i think. works out at around the 12% mark yearly

Sounds like it's financially viable, then. Next question is whether you're happy with the car and intend to keep it for the foreseeable..

If you need somewhere undercover to do the conversion there's a garage in Alton available. I'm sure JamesV6CDX will be along for the weekend again at the slightest whiff of LPG. ;)

The car is going nowhere i want to keep her. for aleast the next 5yrs or so and more so if i convert her. i also have you guys to help me keep the cost of fixing her down too. most work i can do myself if not i know where i can get hold of a great second pair of hands to help ;D ;D ;D ;D

The only problem i have wit her at the mo i the small atf leak in the bell housing which james has said that i souldnt worry about it too much and the gearbox need time to settle and check it  again in 500 miles. i think about it but not worried cos i know if their is a snag with it james has said he would help me correct it it cant be anything major at worst its the torque converter seal and that only cost £30 and a days work dropping the gearbox out again to fit it.

The alton garage sounds like a plan. means i wouldnt have to worry about the weather prospects on the day.  and its only 30 miles away. its it your place?

james has already offered to help me convert it. and i offered to help him convert his new motor(when he gets it)

I have this kit as well fitted on my V6.

So far i have done 15,000 since conversion (nov) and have had no problems with the kit, any issues i have had have been to do with the installation, one thing i got wrong and one thing the auto sparky messed up.

I put £20 worth of petrol in every month and a half, the rest of the time i am filling up twice weekly with gas @ 49p per litre.

Would i do it again, yes, if you are going for this kit bear in mind you will need the back end kit as well, and ask for Poly pipe, it is a lot easier than running copper tube from front to back
