Putting a bit back
« on: 26 December 2011, 08:12:55 »

Morning all, up early for boxing day, off down to the homeless shelter to do a bit of cheffing, helping out with cooking lunch for about eighty people less fortunate. Did Christmas day last year, it was a great atmosphere in the kitchen. It makes you realise what you have got in this world when you see how little there is in the guests lives.

Good news indeed T - away from the festivities and family gatherings there are some souls who are alone.

Why they are so is, for the most part, unimportant (either by design or circumstances beyond any control) but the fact that they remain isolated - especially at this time of year - is quite a sobering and thought provoking matter.  It's good to see how many people in society take up the challenge to do something constructive about this by offering their time and practical assistance.

Would that more could be done for those individuals who, as they make their way thought this life, are without the bedrock of a partner or family life and who are destined to exist on the fringes of society largely ignored by all but a few.

Sadly, in this modern world, there is a fine dividing line between relative prosperity and comfort and very straitened circumstances and its there on the streets of our country - each and every day - for all to see.

Well done. 8)

Well done... What a great way to giving  somebody a reason to carry on in their fight to overcome their troubles they may be facing in life.

You could've called here on your way. I think that our left overs from yesterday would've fed half of your homeless. Not that Mrs Andy B over caters every time!  ;D ;D ;D

Well done Tony, which shelter you at? I probably know a lot of the people you will be serving through my work with the drug services in Mesreyside. Homeless they may be but no lesser a person than any of us !! Just glad the weather was a lot milder this year for them.

The shelter is at the Achemy Centre in Southport it wasn't quite as busy as last year possibly down to the milder weather  but still busy enough. Sixty guests got a nice roast pork dinner with all the trimmings, clothes especially coats, sleeping bags, also sandwiches and other food to take away for later.

You're a star Tony. That's such a selfless act that is sadly uncommon nowadays. I tried last year to do this but left it too late although a very friendly  group phoned me back thanking me but they were'nt doing anything last year but stay in touch. I did'nt!

    Sending PM. Guy.

When I was living in Hertfordshire, before swmbo and I got together and away from family I used to help with a group that collected older people who were alone at Christmas, we would collect them, take them to a central centre and give them a Christmas dinner, being a waiter for them and returning them home afterwards. Our reward was a cooked dinner ourselves, a sense of putting something back and a load of fun and banter with the old people we had gathered, some of whom could be quite cantankerous, but we enjoyed ourselves doing it....... :D :D :D

Yep+2. I've had a PM from Tony with some pointers & am definately going to look further into this. We are all lucky enough to sit in the christmas comfort of friends/family food & drink in the warm.

Some are'nt as fortunate & need a hand. I hav'nt always had things as easy as i have now but i'm going to contact the first step (local council volunteering) & take it from there. No need to wait for next christmas either.

It can be a very easy misconseption for alot of people to make that homeless people have drug and drink problems as a matter of course, in the main this is the effect and not the cause, chatting to the guests yesterday and being aware of there situations there plight is what life has delt them. Family breakdowns and rifts, lost jobs and homes, mental health issues all take there toll. Also when you consider that many homeless are ex armed forces it is a very sad situation. There but for the grace of God? :'(
