which anti virus

my mate who isnt computer literate was given his dads old lappy,cant remember which version of windows it is,its 512mb ram and 40gb hard drive and tomorrow im goint to set it up for him and cant decide which protection to put on it.with the low ram i believe avg will slow it down and as for the others i dont know.possibly avast,can anybody recommend one.for a few months hes gonna be using a dongle then he will be having sky

Go for AVG or Avast. Both free and neither are ram hungry :y

hes not downs but he was starved of oxygen in the womb and hes a tad slower than normal peeps so i want something simple he doesnt have to worry about and all he will be looking at is leeds united/horse racing/youtube and boobies  ;D

microsoft security essentials.. free and dont bring the system to its knees..
ive looked at that cem and its a possibility but some say its not very efficient,but as you say doesnt slow the system downa nd for his browsing it may be ok :y

I use Avast on 2 laptops and touch wood up to now now problems at all!

Agreed - used to use AVG, now on Avast on all my systems - no issues.

I agree with Avast. I used to use AVG but it slowed things down a lot. Avast does the business, keeps out the way unless it finds a duff site, and is very good at getting rid of them. I also keep Spybot on as well just to make sure, although it doesn't get used often.

I use security essentials alongside AVG and find it very good. It does require some manual inputs from you once a week but very easy to use. It does only work on Vista and Windows 7 though. Can't find a version for windows XP.

And a friend tells me it works well on boobies sites  :y

I'm of the opinion that the free ones are better than nothing, but you get what you pay for.

AVG and Avast also sell full versions - so you get better protection.

I used to use Macfee until it screwed my machine up with a download many years ago.

Since then I've always subscribed to Norton, can use it on 3 machines, and never had any problems.

In use now for over a decade.
