Smell of petrol, where to get it fixed in Bedford?
« on: 05 January 2012, 22:48:42 »

My omega (2001 Elite 2.6V6 Auto Petrol) smells of fresh petrol inside when stopped in traffic, the smell is even stronger outside and under the bonnet. Fuel consumption is also gone up a fair few bit. I'm not a car nut so can anybody please suggest a garage in Bedford where I can go and get it fixed (without getting ripped off)?

Thanks.

You may wait have to wait some time before someone local to you who knows a good garage reads your post.
It sounds like you dont have time to wait. You have a fuel leak which could easily be very dangerous. My advice would be to ask friends, family neighbours etc. to recommend a mobile mechanic who can come to you,so that you dont have to drive the car until its fixed. It sounds as though it isnt safe to be used until its had diagnosis of the problem.

It's difficult for me to get to work without the car. Nothing can be smelt when it's moving. After driving it when I come out of the car I can smell the petrol but it goes away after a few minutes. Also the car is driving fine without any warning lights or such.

I'll wait for any Bedfordian member comes along and suggest me a garage.

I am not sure there is a warning light for ''your car is about to become a fireball''!

Albs has already pointed out that you have a potentially dangerous problem that needs immediate attention so get it sorted before you drive it.

Safety first.

The reason that it doesn't smell when moving is that you have a better supply of fresh air. It'll still be leaking.

A fuel leak that you can smell should be visible. Have a good look under the bonnet, and also follow the fuel lines down inside the driver's side wheel arch and along the bottom of the car - they are easy to find. Do this with the engine running and see if you can spot any moisture anywhere.

Also, lift the boot carpet and you will see a round silver plate with 4 screws in it. Remove this and look at the connections to the fuel tank there. Often the pipes here get leaky.

As for a local garage recommendation, I agree that people you know living locally would probably give a quicker answer but someone here might be able to help.

Thank you all for all your sugguestion. I'll check the boot carpet tomorrow and also I'll ask around my work place if anyone knows about any garage.

I was reading another members post who had similar problem. Here's the post - http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=97755.0

Shall I check/replace the pollen filter as suggested in above post?
