Uses for old engine oil!
« on: 07 January 2012, 17:43:06 »

I'm sure many of us have a bottle of old oil kicking around in the garage waiting to go to the tip.  ???

I've found it to be a very good alternative to creosote for garden fences and gates etc, but I also use it to polish light scrapes and scratchs on plastic bumpers and trim and it's alot cheaper and just as effective as 'Back to Black'!!  :) :y

What other things do you lot use your old oil for??  ???

Provided it doesn't rub off on your clothes...?

I take mine to a local garage. They have an oil burning heater. In summer I then take it on to the dump as they have loads. ;D

That's interesting, I'm treating all my fence boards and posts in used engine oil in wheely bins. I thought about using it as creosote to apply with a brush. Does it work ok like that, you seem to be quite knowledgeable in old oil uses!

I was going to get some of that tarmac reviver stuff that you put on with a roller. It basically just colours it and improves the appearance, but someone said I can use old oil instead. Not sure about this though, I think it won't dry aswell and still be a bit slippy.

I've heard of people filtering it and using it as 'black' diesel.

being old school,
 :o
i put it in a 5 litre can and use it to fill my pump oil can which i use for hinges,stuck/rusted bolts and nuts, in short anyting that needs oiling/lubricating, much cheaper then wd40 or any of the other similar products, it clings much better to the parts im removing or reassembling,
if it stains anything it shouldnt do, then a quick wipe with  drop of methylated spirit dampened rag and its clean again,
use it for lubricated the quad chain, the ball joints, the steering stem, throttle/brake cables etc etc
highly recommended for all these!!   :y

complicated.

1 its easy identified by the authorities.

2 thicker somewhat than diesel (needs heating)

3 oil filters filter to a lower level than a fuel filter. (metal particles)

4 less than 20% ratio

5 ?? hdi engine

what's hdi? I thought it was just the pegeot/renault/citroen whatever version of turbo diesel? Although from reading various stuff I get the impression that these engines are more primitive than modern turbo diesels so can take any sort of crap as fuel. i don't know the difference in the engines bewteen tdi and dti and all that. i know what commomn rail is though.

Surely it's not illegal though is is? Why would the authorities give a crap? If you can do so many thouand litres of veg oil is this not ok? Probably not now all the robots are trying to assimilate us.
