Broardband help please..!
« on: 07 January 2012, 22:23:30 »

Hi people,

Hope you all had a good xmas, and Happy new year!

Just got back online, with Sky. I've had a number of problems with internet service to which we have had 5 different BT engineers attend to say that everything is fine!
However when I call sky tech help, they say that they can clearly see that our service keeps 'dropping out'.

Pulling my hair out now, so I've set up a monitor to hopefully record this 'dropping out' issue we are having.

Does the below graph make sense to anyone? If so is there anything unusual about it? (not really sure what the spikes mean!) I must add that the yellow spikes are around the same time our net speed nose-dives and things like on-line games go out of sync

Thanks  :y

It could be due to equipment on the line, test it without anything else plugged in the phone lines. It could also be a router issue, the cable or even the filter dongle.
If you can get the built in face plate filter, it improved the service on my dads line from using a separate filter dongle

thanks for the reply. On one of the many BT engineer visits the faceplate was replaced, but it hasn't made any difference.

There is now nothing else plugged into the line, solely the filter ~ router. We have a desktop (cabled) and a laptop (wireless) both perform the same.

Sky have sent replacement microfilters and a new router but no difference.

I just seem to be banging my head against a wall!

I suspect there is a fault with the line but TB will not take liability as I went with BT instead of them!

I have had this issue in years past and it is the most frustrating of experiences.

Basically if Sky is your ISP they are supposed to be the one's who resolve the problems with BT - but often they don't go the extra mile when there is a more complex fault.

Maybe worth dropping a pm to Tunnie giving your details and problem as he works for Sky and certainly has helped me and others.

sadly, as BT are not my ISP they wont help, i dont even have a ref no to give, my line rental is paid through sky too. its driving me mad now. think its time for a complaint leter, so long as the graphs above are showing a fault - I'm not sure they are to be honest!
cheers

This is nothing to do with BT Retail, so they will not assist. Why should they?

It's Sky's problem to resolve, irrespective of you their suppliers are, of which BT are just one. If its a freebie Sky, Easynet are a big supplier, but they won't take your call either (even though Sky recently bought Easynet).

IME, the freebie sky broadband service isn't great (understatement of the year), but should be OK for basic surfing. If you're gaming, VoIP or P2P/NNTP, you probably need to look at a better ISP.

Can't see a 'fault' as such. Unless the Packet Loss line hasn't come out well in that picture.  The latency is occasionally bloody awful, but it depends how the tool is working it out - if ICMP echo request, that generally has the lowest priority on most large routers.

Well I was with BT last year but for what ever reason they couldn't give me a higher download spped than 5mb, sky claimed they could offer 9-16mb. So i went with Sky and paid for the unlimited usage, £7.50 extra p/m + line rental. And to start I was very impressed, often reaching 16mb on download speeds, averaging 12/13mb. when it's running well it's great, best service I've ever had, however when this 'fault' occurs it's very annoying. example below, between 1pm-2pm service was very slow, online games required refreshing and again at about 4pm whilst on skype, we kept loosing connection and had to re-call to resume the conversation.

Those graphs mean nothing TBH, as believe they are ICMP based.  They aren't showing a problem either.
