Opinions/Advice Please
« on: 08 January 2012, 11:46:11 »

Hi everyone,

I'm new on here so please be gentle. My dad has owned an Omega for years and I've decided I'd quite fancy one as well.
I have been looking at an 03 plate CDX 2.6 V6 with 70,000 miles on the clock. It is a one owner from new car and has a full Vauxhall service history including the cambelt at 65,000 miles.

Is there anything I should be wary/concerned of? I am planning to keep the car for the next 2 to 3 years and am hoping for trouble free motoring.

Many Thanks in advance,

Dan.

Cambelt being done is a bonus, also check if Water pump was done at the same time or when it was last changed as that can cause issues, check for any EML codes from the peddle, and check for mayo within dipstick and traces of oil in the water, just in case its been a quick trade in with suspected HG on its way out.

Other than that most of the other common things are just niggles with a reasonable fix.

Thanks Chris, very grateful for your reply. The oil on the dipstick was completely normal as was the dipstick itself. There was a mayo looking build up on the underside of the oil cap, is this normal?

Also in fear of asking a second question the car in question has a tow bar, is it relatively easy to remove? I have been told that by removing it, it could weaken the chassis of the car, is this the case?

Many thanks for your help and responses.

Mayo is normal on the V6. Towbar, just unbolt, disconnect wiring plug behind panel in boot (where the latch is), and no, it won`t weaken the chassis

1. Normal, esp on short runs, use VX oil on the next change.
2. Never heard that one before myself.

Any Codes come up on the peddle trick?

Thanks zirk, I won't be able to see the vehicle until Saturday now. Obviously any error codes are bad, but are there any specific ones that would suggest I walk away?

Many Thanks.

No, not really. If you have a code then the fix is usually (not always) a case of changing a faulty sensor.

More important is to check that the tell tale bulbs haven't been removed to mask a fault (oil pressure, ABS, engine, car with a spanner through it & air bag). All of these should light up when the ignition is first switched on and then go off when they have run a self check.

Other things that would cause me to walk away from an Omega would be rust on the rear doors & wheel arches, poor paint, accident damage or a rattling engine.

Everything else is fixable but a neglected car can have lots of issues the cost of which can add up to more than the car is worth :(

Completely agree and couldn't have said it better myself, specially when the price of miggys has dropped. Better doing a thorough check before then regretting later  :y

Thanks Stallion. I am hoping as it is a one owner car with full VX service history it will be a car that has been looked after. I'm trying to compile a list of things to check any other tips/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Common - Wishbones, track rod ends, basically feel for any play on the steering. Uneven tyre wear would indicate to those mentioned before.  :y
