Sell or Keep - confused
« on: 09 January 2012, 14:05:20 »

This post reads like a dear Deirdre for cars!
just after some general "this is what id do advice" as I don't know what to do! sorry for the ramble!

My Omega (3.2 elite) is a perfect car for me. as I don't use it too much.It gets left at the airport car park and the euro star car park for a few days a week, and I don't worry about pops and scratches as it's basically a 10 year old car. But its a 10 year old that's nice drive and drives well.

2010 its had cam belt, exhaust, tyres and service. but just now I've been quoted for lower sump, rocker gaskets (smell of burning) and pinion oil seal. the garage said it'll come to more than the cars worth..

So what do I do?
A. shell out
B. trade/sell on

there aren't newer ones (Id have another one tomorrow if there where) and If I sell it what do I get instead? What's the new Omega. In the US we have the CTS and BLS kind of replacing the cetera but there aren't many over here?
by way of background (its a 03) on 68k and a full history from the Met and Vx dealer

A) DIY

B) get one of the forum based meega specialist mechanics , such as ,   "Darth loo knee" or "Wellung666" , "Elite Pete" or "JamesV6CDX"   to do it for you....   it will be MUCH more cost effective,  and almost certainly a better done job...

almost all garages are clueless , incompetent breaktards , with two eyes on your wallet and none on the job....

we're all driving them still because there is bugger all to replace them with that represents a similar quality/price equation

Petrol for the next couple of months will probably come to more than the car's worth too - doesn't mean it's a good reason for ditching a car that serves you well. You've spent on the main jobs it's going to need for a good couple of years, and there is no "new Omega" so might as well get one of our mechanics to sort it for sensible money and carry on, IMHO.

My wife said that the fact he then offered to Buy the car was a clue I should have taken.

Kevin. I guess you do your own maintenance but you might know who/where more locally to you and therefore me (im in Berkshire) I could try.. (I will PM the names above also).

I'd love to try myself but Im only really a 2-3 spanner skill (using the Haynes measure :-))

As said... keep it and take it to Daz (DLK).

I can personally vouch that he is a great mechanic and thoroughly decent chap and will sort your car!  :y

Cam cover gaskets is probably about a 3.5 spanner job, just follow our guides. Diff pinion seal is a job I've never attempted, but seen it done. Looked fiddly.

Lower sump? why? Oil leak?

Not sure I'm happy with the diagnosis TBH...

Yep. Not sure how you'd diagnose a lower sump oil leak if it's leaking down from the cam covers. Garage covering all the options instead of diagnosing properly? ::)

Needs someone to have a gander by the sound of it. Even if the lower sump joint is leaking its not that hard to fix. If the alloy part above the lower sump is leaking - between alloy and bottom of the block, it gets quite involved imo.
At the end of the day,if the OP really likes his car, it sounds like it will be worth his while getting it fixed, but doing a bit of homework/ research to have it done properly at a reasonable price. The perrenial problem of folks who drive an older car and want to keep it running.

Reading through various threads and local mechanics estimates it appears that they're all useless and incompetent.

The guys on here a.) know what they're doing and b.) never rip anyone off.

So as said before get someone on here to do your mechanical jobs.

I go to Daz and he lives in Stoke so it's a 2 hour trip each way! But I'd rather spend money on petrol and a day trip to see a nice guy and have peace of mind rather than spend £65 (I think what Vx charge) for an inspection where, so far as I can tell, they've lifted the bonnet, drank a tea, scratched their nuts, shut it again and collected your £65 and done precisely fek all >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Nb. I am sure this doesn't go for all Vx dealers but certainly it does for the ones in my locality!

That'd be great... I'll Message you... Id like to try and do that part myself and then perhaps just get the Pinion seal done somewhere as that looks a bit more involved...
