Bose System - Lack of Bass
« on: 12 January 2012, 20:00:08 »

I was playing about with fader settings this afternoon - I have a 2013 head unit with what seems to be a standard speaker setup - and noted that the rear sound was far from bassy, sounding quite flat in fact.

Am I right in thinking that the rear speakers are (or should be) sub-woofers. This being the case I would expect a far lower frequency ouput. Overall the sound is not bad when balanced left/right and front rear but overall I've heard better and am now wondering whether there may be something wrong with my setup.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Should be Bose speakers. Do you have an amp fitted in the boot under parcel shelf (saloon), O/S rear cubby hole (estate)?

Yep I've got the amp fitted under the parcel shelf between the rear speakers. The setup looks like the diagram for a saloon and there is certainly output to each speaker as I've done the rounds by selecting front right to rear right then rear left to front left.

I've now taken another look and noted (for the first time) that there is what appears to be an additional speaker pod along the back of the parcel shelf tight to the rear screen. This must surely be some form of sub-unit but isn't shown of the key diagram in the typical bose setup diagram I've seen elsewhere.

Now even more puzzled. I think removal of some panels may be necessary tomorrow as a starter to see if this further speaker (if that's what it is) is hooked up

If you mean the long, thin grill, there's not supposed to be another speaker under it.  :y

Ahh. I wont go looking for a speaker there then. It certainly looks like a speaker grill - just in keeping with the other two I suppose.

Can you confirm your car is an Elite, or another flavor with Bose added, where abouts in Hertfordshire are you?

Chris.

My wagon is indeed an Elite, 3.2. I live in Waltham Cross. On the Bose issue I couldn't find anything obvious re wiring etc and I've since had another dabble with my system and I think because the rear speakers are in fact subs they tend not too give much output unless the choice of music is right. I wound the system up yesterday with some Pink Floyd, Rush and Black Sabbath and its not at all bad after all. I've altered the fade to bias a bit more to the rear and it seems ok. I wasn't interested in doing anything too radical because I'm not planning on keeping her for too much longer but I've had some decent hifi in other cars in more recent years and the system just sounded a bit flat in comparison. I expect its a victim of it's age but still not bad for a car over 10 years old.

Ok, Im on the Epping Forest side of Waltham Abbey, so just round the corner from you, I'll be more than happy to shoot over and have a look or listen at yours and do some checks, I'll bring one of mine with Bose so you can do a comparison, wont be able to do anything till after Wednesday though.

I may take you up on that although as I said now that I've played around with the balance and put some decent music on it's not as bad as I thought. Another blast this morning got me into head nodding mode - much to the embarassment of my daughter who was sitting next to me at the time.
