Hi all can anyone enlighten me on a possible con? I seem to recall i've seen this scam posted on the web in the past possibly on OOF but I can't remember the details, probably down to my age  :-\. My son has advertised his car a two hundred and fifty quid motor on Autotrader and has had three similar responses from "potential" buyers. One of which claims to live in Sweden. He stated that he would send a cheque for the full price plus twenty quid if he pulled the advert. He also stated that he would send someone over to collect the car, but not until his cheque payment had been presented and cleared in my lads account. Sounds to good to be true but as stated It's a con but wheres the catch?  :-\

Yes it's a con - had a load of these when I was selling a car a year ago

These were a paypal version but I believe this one is with bogus cheque's or something from which the money get's taken back but car is gone

I simply told them to come in person and pay cash or loose out ....

yeah thats how i got rid of the swede in the end told him to call in person....he never did turn up lol :y

I'm not fully au fait with it, but it's along the lines that funds can be reclaimed, many months after apparently clearing into your account.

Money being paid into your account, is different to a cheque clearing. The money will be credited to your account after 3 to 5 days. It is only when the funds don't chear at the issuing bank up to 3 weeks later, you will find out the cheque has bounced and the bank has taken back the amount they have credited you with plus an administration fee.

Many years ago when I had a mail order business this used to happen occasionally, sometimes by accident where somebody was overdrawn (they would send anther cheque which would clear) and sometime deliberately and I would never hear from them again. They were only small amounts, in a high profit margin business, so it was not worth pursuing.

I had the oceanographer one last night looking to buy my Corrado VR6 for his dad as a surprise but could only pay by PayPal as he was currently at sea, but after I googled it, it turns out PayPal don't release the money because it's such a large amount, he then emails to say he can't pay his shipping company(who will collect the car) by PayPal so he will add this to my PayPal payment and could I then pay the shipping company, but because PayPal won't release funds till he has car and authorises PayPal to release it, I have to pay shipping company from my own money!! SCAM!!!!!
My reply to him involved the google link and some choice swear words, funny he did not reply
