Anyone with a later 2.6 or 3.2 noticed
« on: 17 January 2012, 12:40:03 »

If there is a bracket from the dipstick to the Bastaed Bolt?

To explain what I mean.......
Had a look at a 03 2.6 the other day and the dipstick was loose so not attached. Removed the Pain in the Arse Bolt, moved the engine lifting bracket to find that the bracket on the dipstick is about an inch lower than it should be. So the famous Bolt has no chance of going through it.
I can't actually think I have ever seen a bracket of any description to secure the dipstick other than obviously the flange with its hole in attached to the dipstick.......  ??? and if there is such a bracket, why alter the dipsticks?

I might know the answer here.

The engine has been swapped or someone has broken the dipstick tube. As I'm sure you are aware, removing a dipstick tube thats been there for 10 years is not normally going to end happily, unless you use loads of wd40 and take loads of time. I suspect the tube has been broken at some point in the past (possibly in previous engine) and the pipe has just been stuck in the hole in the block. If you are lucky they'll have used o-rings to seal it, but without a place for the o-rings to sit, they'll be pretty much useless.

On a side note, if it's and inch lower, the oil level will be wrong ;)

Whilst I appreciate what your saying, the actually length of the dipstick seems right, it is its bracket thats puzzled me. I did wonder myself if it had been swapped at some point but I was sure they were all the same.... Hence the question  :y

In have a recollection of seeing one with the dipstick on a separate bolt. Might even have been when I did my thermostat. :-\

The vectra dipstick is different. I see what you mean now, the dipstick hole is in the right place, but the coolant pipe hole isn't lining up?

The one bolt, known as the bastard bolt fastened three things to the head.  Engine Lifting Bracket, Thermostat Transfer Pipe and the Dipstick Tube.  The Dipstick Tube has a sort of a flange (with a hole in it) thats maybe welded to the Dipstick Tube. All three holes need to line up so the bolt goes through each to fasten them to the head. Engine Bracket and Transfer Pipe line up but the Dipstick Tube hole is around an inch lower.

Hope thats a little clearer :-*
