Brake shoe retaining pins parted co. with backplate
« on: 20 January 2012, 17:18:18 »

The brake shoe retaining pins have parted company with the backing plate - I've got new springs & pins but don't have much of a clue how to fit them.
I guess the backing plate will have to be replaced as well - how big a job is this i.e. will the bearings have to be pulled out (garage job I guess) - is there an easy fix?
Any suggestions/hints/money would be welcome    :y

What year of car and is it the pins that stick are retained behind the back plate or the early ones which clip into the back plate?

2.5 cdx facelift - year 2000; not sure which pins I have as I only removed the brake disc and the 2 pins + 2 mangled springs fell out - not had chance yet to remove brake shoes to see if the back plate is damaged.

GM Field Remedy on these

The old style that push through the shoe and twist into the back plate have been superseeded to the later style that has the pin coming through the back plate and then uses the retaining cups that twist onto the pins.

The offical way of doing thses is to remove the rear hubs so factor in bearings while you at it, there are a couple of ways of removing the hubs, first is to pay a garage for the grief or find someone who is able to help as its the removal of the arm and the use of various hammers.

You might find that if you can undo the bolts that hold the back plate in place and the hole isn't to damaged you may be able to feed the pins in from behind but be warned if you strip the splines on the bolt head you will have a hell of a job to get them out

If you need to replace the back plates then other people have done this by cutting the plates in half and then fitting which avoids the need to remove the hubs. This isn't an offical GM way of doing the job and you have to be careful how you cut the plates so more research would be needed

Cheers

Cheers Andy - I think you've just condemned my omega to the scrappers :'(
Exhaust just blown, needs new wishbones + subframe bushes - too much hassle and to much expense for it to be economically viable.
Anyone want bits for their omega PM me  :y
