Loss of power
« on: 20 January 2012, 20:35:03 »

Omega 2.5 CD V6 (2000) kept seeming like it was going to cut out while driving/breaking and at the same time has lost power accelerating, doesn't want to go above 3000 rpm....  So I got the idling problem seen to (dodgy valve) but the acceleration is still gash.  Garage have done a full service (it was overdue) and told me there could be a few things wrong with it, possibly serious, but to drive it a couple hundred miles and see if anything obvious crops up...  Any ideas?

I'm female, and not mechanical, so be gentle with the tech speak please :)

Hi is the spanner light on on the dash, may have a sensor gone, so would need to read the codes stored, look at paper clip in maintenance guide. should help you.

When you switch the ignition on, without starting the engine ... do the "spanner" light and the one that looks like an engine, both come on and then go out ???

If not, possibly someone has removed the bulb to mask a fault ... not an unheard of practice .. :(

Sazzaa, hello and welcome.

First of all, sack your mechanic. ''Run it for 200 miles and see what happens''??? WTF?

I am no mechanic, but a loss of power and acceleration... misfire perhaps???

If I were you I'd enlist the services of one of the legends on here to diagnose and repair!

Just my opinion! :)

If the mass airflow sensor is suspected, unplug the electrical connector and see if the car runs better. It will go to a default setting when disconnected, and not be as pokey as it should be,but run reasonably ok. If it runs better with it unplugged you need to replace it.

Ha, I can't blame the mechanic fully, I think he was trying to save me paying a huge bill all at once!  (I'd mentioned I didn't have more than a couple hundred to spare at the moment and am heading on holiday in 2 weeks...)
