why make one up when you can buy one

A lot easier than messing about making your own.

On the face of it, it does seem strange that somebody capable of making a back box can't measure the outside diameter of the mid sections.

Not aware of the measurement of mine off hand btw, bet be aware not all exhaust makers stick religiously to the exact same sizes. It's not uncommon for one make of back box not to fit another makers mid sections or vice versa, for instance. So in answer to your question you "may" get a size different to yours.

Measure the sizes of the parts your using first hand surely?

So.  You asking for the nominal inside dia of the box inlet?  As I recall, the swages in the system are on the box inlets to the nominal larger size and thus the nominal inside dia is the outside dia of the main pipe.  Wouldn't take two mins to measure, either with a vernier caliper or screw manual o/s calipers and a tape measure (or indeed, a fabric tape measure and a bit of schoolboy maths).   :y
