Clutch problem- general Q
« on: 26 January 2012, 11:39:18 »

My Vitara (not a golf) has started giving me difficulty in selecting reverse in particular even with the clutch pedal fully down it still graunches. Also the pedal fully down sometimes initiates a sound like a dry bearing.

I have little experience with clutches having driven proper cars for the last 30 odd years but I suspect that the clutch plate  is on the way out and maybe the "thrust release " bearing too. Clutching at straws may it be a clutch cylinder fault?

No service history this being Spain you don't pay VAT if you don't get a receipt so it may be on its original clutch. 75k miles?

Out of interest how much would a garage charge to do the clutch and bearing in England in case I decide I can't do it!

A "squeeeaka" when you push the clutch is more likely the clutch fork pivot point being dry than the release bearing. A "squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" that only stops when you take your foot back off the clutch is the release bearing.

No synchro on reverse so if the clutch is failing to release (hydraulic clutch with a leak or air, perhaps?) then you'll grind into reverse due to clutch drag.
