Rear left wheel area rubbing and making noise
« on: 09 February 2012, 09:35:28 »

Hi guys,

On the way to work this morning after about 5 miles the rear left wheel area started making a rubbing/clicking noise especially when I lift off the accelerator. Anyone have any ideas?

Could it be as simple as a stuck brake due to the cold or a stone/debris caught in the wheel area? (Hoping it is this as I drive on nice streets for 5 miles and then a little crappy/dirty road with lots of gravel and stuff like that for the next 2 miles.

Could it be a suspension problem or a wheel bearing?

Is there anything I can do in a few minutes of looking under the car/jacking it up to check what it might be? Could I spray it with a spray to see if that eases any sticking of any kind?

What about a handbrake cable or something like that?

It's a saloon.

Thanks guys

Sounds like it's either some debris or the hand brake shoes dragging/breaking up. If the latter, it needs sorting ASAP as it could (potentially) lock up when driving :o Admittedly, that is a worst case situation ;)

Hi Lazydocker, ok understood. So if it is a piece of debris then I can take the wheel off and try to clear out the brake yes but if it is the hand brake shoes issue then it will need a garage to have a look. Ok is it possible for me to tell if it is a broken up/braking hand brake shoe? Are there clear signs such as cracks or fractures or coming loose/apart etc?

Thanks

Hi guys,

What is the best way to check for this silly stone (i think) that is stuck in the left rear wheel?

Remove the alloy wheel and spin round the rotor trying to look at the brake caliper to see if theres a stone stuck in there?

After that is there anything else I can do as its quite annoying now, been about 100 miles and its still there!

Thanks
