How can you be sure the HBV is leaking
« on: 11 February 2012, 10:48:47 »

Hi
I'm loosing water intermittently. Have tried the ventilation settings from freezing  8) to hot, then off, and the HBV stays dry. I've checked the oil for water and the water for oil, couldn't see any and the water smelt like antifreeze, (HG) no gunge on oil filler cap or breather pipes and I have put a tray under the sump to see if it is leaking when in garage, just one small drip at the front of the tray this morning.
I have been reading other threads and being as my motor as covered 92,000 miles and I'm due an oil change, I will replace the HBV, at the same time, (when weather warms up a bit) and see what happens.
When the HBV fails, where does the water go, evaporates I suppose???
If the HG has gone, am I right in thinking, that, as the cam belt, water pump etc. have done under 15,000 miles I would be OK to refit them?

Daz answered for a v6 engine. Going by your profile, your engine is a 2.2. 4 cylinder. So not relevant to your engine.

Not that familiar with the. 2.2 myself. But your post suggests the leak might be from the front of the engine? Where the water pump lives on the 2.2. But on the other hand, I dunno where the hbv lives on that engine.

So guess you'll be needing a 4pot owner to help more specifically.

You could try sort of wrapping it in a see-thru plastic bag, as best you can round all the hoses.  That way you may see/catch drips and/or condensation.

Other than that, replace it and see if there's a change in the coolant usage.

Should be OK to re-fit cambelt and leave waterpump, IMHO, if it does turn out to be HG.
