Quite often cars have problems and the advice is replace the sensor with a genuine one, because pattern ones don't last.

If I'm not mistaken sensors like the cam and crank sensors, are basically coils of wire connected with cables to the main loom. Now a coil of wire doesn't wear out, it either breaks or develops internal shorts, so I guess its likely to be the connecting cable that breaks down, esp the V6 crank sensor cable that is very close to the exhaust. The break may be intermittent so the fault will come and go, but that's it.

Is it not worth while trying to replace the connecting cable with new wire, either heat rated or flexible wire ?. That way the original good quality VX sensor is kept and it should last as long as the repair does. Modern technology means we have good sealing epoxy available, and cables that must be better than those used 10 years ago, and if you remember the cost of a new cam sensor is £60, then ....

MAF , lambda and throttle position,coolant temperature  sensors also change in performance.. not totally donald but readings become inaccurate..
 
imo they are also wear/tear items..
 
ps: I changed all of them and difference was obvious..
