Which rear shocks/dampers?
« on: 12 February 2012, 11:30:20 »

I have a 3.2 Elite, not really interested in fitting S/L shocks.

My car has lowered springs, definitely shorter than standard and are red - MV6 I guess?  I also have a towbar fitted but I don't tow anything, sometimes use a bike rack though.

So I'm thinking MV6 spec rear shocks will be most suitable; but the trade book isn't exactly clear in identifying these.

Done some digging and these are the two most likely I've found.

3.2i 24v V6 - Y32SE    Saloon; Except Sports Chassis; Ident WM    72119086

And 9193196/7 which isn't listed in the trade book.

So am I right in thinking MV6 shocks are what I need and if so, what is the correct part number?

Could be Irmscher, if so, worth a fair few pennies

I believe all lowered sports chassis rear shocks are described as "sport" which is the description for the 2.2 with lowered sports chassis. Lowered sports chassis is facelift mv6 suspension on a v engine and sport for a 2.2.

Rears are all the same( except estate and saloon obviously), as only the front shocks change according to engine(and hence weight)

So you want "with lowered sports chassis" for your engine on the front.

And "sport" for the rear (crap description in the listings IMO but there we are)

What you have listed are just stock shocks for cdx cd etc I believe.

But, given your springs should be black if mv6 lsc, I suspect you have either irmscher or pi or some other aftermarket springs fitted. In which case the drop in ride height is likey to be more then the 15mill of the mv6. Prob nearer 30mm. So although sport shocks will probably take the extra 15mill drop, I might be tempted with Bilstein b4's in your case which will take a 30mill drop.
Although I guess on cost vx will be cheaper esp on tc?

That's very helpful, much appreciated.

I believe it's a 30mm drop, still struggling to find the correct VX rear 'sport' shocks.

If these B4 shocks are better than OEM and aren't extortionate I'll get them, got a link to them?

Try balance motor sport.

But I found I had to google around to find any in stock.

The B4 ones for my car seem bloody cheap from balance motor sport.

£50 for the pair + delivery.

Anyone fitted these to irmscher springs (or similar), and if so how are they?

Interestingly Bilstein list part number 90542942 as the comparable part from VX.

Yeah I paid about 230 for a set iirc.

I have them with irmscher springs and polly fronts. Very very good. Massively more stable at speed. Way less roll.

Only slight criticism, tiny bit harsh over bad or broken surfaces. But I'm being fussy.

I should mention there was an mot advisory just after fitting for a very light oil mist on the rear shocks. Which there was. Very very light oil mist.

Back sits a bit low when loaded, but then I have a tow bar and LPG tank in the boot.
