Opinion please on the Lexus IS 200
« on: 12 February 2012, 17:11:19 »

Having spend 2 days trawling around car sales many a car has been viewed but nothing jumping out, tis for swmbo ::) ::)
Miss Vamps spotted an 02 2.6 CDX Omega, has potential and cheap but did not present itself very well....Manky inside.... ::) ::)

Having said no to a CLK she found this Lexus, and she got in it.......first car she has done so..........Got home and she looked it up of the Internet.....the signs are good... :y :y

It's a 2.0L 6 cylinder with only 51K miles, fsh....Am I right in thinking they are Toyota based? it reminded her of her much missed Mitsubishi Gallant....

Lexus is the 'luxury' division of Toyota (with all that it implies to costing)

While the dealers get a well deserved reputation for customer service - my car was subject to a recall a couple of weeks ago and after the remedial work was done it received a full valet, £25 worth of fuel and I received two bottles of quite a decent Spanish wine for the inconvenience - that reputation comes at a price.

During the additional but complimentary 'safety inspection' the following was found - lifted from the report - "Right hand rear calliper bracket seized, requires bracket pins and boots, requires handbrake cables both sides - sticking".  The cost? - £1080.59 of Uncle Denny's spondulicks.

Although many of the parts are interchangeable between the two brands, as long as you can get a friendly Toyota dealer on your side you pay less for the same part by buying through them but this can be difficult as they are told (from my investigations to date) not to do this.

Insofar as the IS is concerned, I've read that some people consider them to be thirsty and quite firm in ride so it may not suit your purposes especially when the cost of parts from Lexus and the eye-watering service costs are taken into consideration.  They are also quite snug inside.

Our guys would do the same and recommend replacement of faulty parts even though they may have been repaired by strpiping and cleaning.

It's for swmbo who is only little...... :D :D  She said it reminds her of the Gallant we had and she loved that :y :y

We have seen one, and would test drive it first, it's and older car than I would have liked to buy, but low miles for the year and on a cursory look, would seem to be in tip top condition..... :y

That's what I find too. Just like a 3 series BMW, I get the feeling of being the least important part of the car, and have to make do with the space that the running gear doesn't need. Performance is disappointing, and the interior feels cheap and nasty as well. Two more things it shares with a smaller engined 3 series.

I'd rather have a Golf.

There is no desperate hurry, the Mig has MOT till the summer............

Now she is talking about a 4x4, but not like the Jeep as that drives like a ship, showed her a picture of a Subaru Legacy for sale nearby, complained that was an 'estate'  she does not know what she wants, till one day something will jump out and take her fancy, we have passed over lots of cars she liked, all because they were manual........mostly soft tops but said no to a Merc SLK? or something like that because it was only 2 seats.  WOMEN.....give me strength... ::) ::) ::)

We currently looking for an is300 (rarer estate version of the 200) for Mrs G. Based on our neighbours experience, their is300 3.0 has been bullet proof from new up to its current 110k with only normal service items and a pair of Lambas needed.

They are fussy on geo set up. But keep their handling well once correct. Firmer more planted ride than omega but then what isn't? Wheels suffer corrosion on the lacquer finish. But apart from that theirs is absolutely mint inside and out. But then they do look after their cars.

Just to add, Mrs G wants an Auto. Is2/300 being the smallest car we could find that was acceptable with a non front wheel drive and therefor hopefully reliable auto box.

4x4, not an estate? Subaru Impreza - a friends wife recently got a newish WRX STi oojit (~300bhp, some kind of sport pack, big fat sticky tyres) .. very nice. Very fast, too. Goes 'round roundabouts sideways very quickly. Not that we'd know, you understand. Mum's the word.
