Well not sure if its been the same around the country but this morning was bedlam around here, roads closed due to last nights black ice, more roads being closed by the Police due to more ice related accidents, Buses on diversions on the main roads only due to back roads being to slippery for them so not serving the local community who need them most, School Buses not sure where to go or do, blah, blah.

So did they grit the roads over the weekend?, No, did they know about the weather forecast this weekend?!!,

Was scratching my head on Sat morning when I saw a White DVLA Transit Van with 4 Cameras on the roof crunching though the snow, so far this morning Ive seen 2 Cars on the back of DVLA Lifters driving out of the area and the icing on the cake for me was as you leave the Town theres a parked up Council ANPR Van with one of those yellow tripod cameras in front of it!

Nice to see theve got their priorities sorted.

Theve had them around here for a while, probably Contractors, I dont know, but they have the logo on the back 'working for a safer enviroment' blah, blah with the councils logo.

Dont get me wrong, all for people having their Cars legal and all that, just pisses me off that for reasons unknown to me they cant be bothered to maintain the roads in this weather, but are quiet happy to screw the motorist instead.

Quite a while, Ealing Council use them a fair bit.

they cant really use the van to grit the roads, so why not use it?

Proper priority. A car pulled is not a car spinning on un-gritted roads, where all the road misary safety budget has been spent on APNR patrols and police offer overtime to man them.

That actually makes a great deal of sense .. if you think about the Physics of it properly ....

At -10 the air is very dry, so very little moisture exists to "drop out" and freeze. Surfaces already frozen will not "melt" if a small amount of salt is added, as salt only changes the freezing point by around 5 degrees at small concentrations, therefore any ice that exists will remain. Grit will do little if there is no ice to work on.

This was obvious last week when your car had little frost on it in the mornings despite the temperature being -10

At +3 (and falling) the air is moist and as the temperature drops that moisture will condense "(drop out)" onto any cold surface, as the temperature drops further it will then freeze. Your car in the morning is covered in ice.  Adding salt in small quantities at this point will stop that freezing process. The amount of salt required to MELT ice is considerably more than the amount required to PREVENT freezing.

Thus the application of salt/grit as the temperature APPROACHES zero is far more effective than applying salt/grit at far colder temperatures.
