Never been to an air show but would love to go one day. excellent nick :y

Never been to one??

That's a shame they are a great day out, although no where near as good as they were in the 70's & 80's :(

The RIAT at Fairford is the biggest international show of the year with plenty of smaller shows around the country :y

Imo, it all stopped after Ramstien and the fun police (health and saftey) started sticking there noses in  :'( :'(

The best ones was the "private" displays that we used to get while on detatchment  ;) ;) ;D

Is that in ref to the crash at Ramstein? That wasn't nice at all, although the Vintage pair that crashed in '86 was dreadful. I watched it happen that day and then saw it all over the news when I got home :(

The "private" displays are always much better, especially when we were on Harriers in the field...now that was fun ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ramstien   Sadly yes  :'( :'(

Remember the vintage pair. Sad day that  :( :(

Never got to play with the Harrier but remember a day out with the II(ac) jag lads on a "shall we say, unofficial" recce compartition with the yanks, krauts, cloggies and us in a field in Holland  :y

The idea was to see who could take the best picture of a 4 tunner with the camera lens set at the same angle. The target was sat in the middle of a field surrounded by tree's  :y
The yanks dropped in with RF4 and took a nice picky of the roof and us lot stood in the back.

The kraut  (Starfighter) and the cloggie (F16) came in but was a dead heat  :)  Both got a better picture.  (top of the wheels showing)

Next came our turn with the rich kid on the block  (Marcus De Feranti) in the hot seat and got that low that the picky showed 3 of us underneath the 4 tonner with our arses out  ;D ;D ;D
Bragging rights that day too the RAF  :y :y

Another one was on a 6 week holiday detatchment to apc cyprus   8) 8)

Just after Topgun came out so must have been 86 ish.
Charlie Chan (yes that was his real name) decieded he was going to do "a maverick" and buz the tower................ UPSIDE DOWN  :D :D :D
He then proceded to chew up half the islands birds and lost both engines / electrics / hyd ect  :'( :'( :'(
He managed to roll the jet away from the village near the end of the runway before banging out to collect his tie from martin baker  :y :y

Iirc, he got a green endorsment for not wipeing out the village and then his gonnads ripping off for the flybye  ;D ;D

Have seen these displays, good stuff. My daughter lives in a village called New Toft, which was the old married quarters for RAF Faldingworth, we had been watching them practice, then it when quite and we sat down for a drink, in the garden, then suddenly, they flew over so low and so fast I spilt my beer.
When we go over in the van to visit for a few days we stop at a site in Dunholme (which also had its own airfield in the war) and have watched them from there.
You know, when you look at these airfields on a map, they are so close together, its a wonder they weren't bumping into each other, come to think, they most probably were.

I  been a airshow nut for many a year, lately staying at the CCC rally a the RIAT show at Fairford. This must be the best show in the world, and you can watch the flying display from the site.
I was on the flight line when the 2 Russian migs collided, and can honestly say I nearly hsit myself.

It happened surprisingly often. If you go to East Kirkby there's various bits of Lancaster that have been pulled out the fields round here.

I know Newtoft and Foldingworth. had mates living in both of them. One of them just moved out of the old nursery that was converted into a house. Had his own squash court!!  :D

I'm the other side of Lincoln, about half way between Waddington and Bardney (another WWII station).

Got a link at work on old stations, I'll post it up if anyone's interested. It is a bit spotter-ish, but pretty interesting for a quiet hour or two surfing. Especially if you serve or did serve in the area.

As for airshows, it depends what you want to see. RIAT is a good one. Waddington is pretty good too. If you can get to one on the sea it's awesome. Bournemouth, Southport etc are all good

I think some were designated satellite airfield to give a reserve landing option, but your right, that still leavea a LOT of operational airbases!
