Spent several hours today trying to rectify the annoying missfire and general lack of power car has and after reseating plenum/checking all cables /all vac pipes I have now got car back together and still running like a bag of nails.

Paper clip test has revelled only code as 17 which is telling me its n/s knock sensor.Have checked the connection where it joins fron of the cable tray and all is sound with no damaged wire etc so all would seem left is the other end of the sensor.

Where abouts is this located and does the wire just run through the cable tray...picture would be really helpfull.

Doe these have a tendency to just die or is it another cause and the sensor is just bringing up the code to advise.

I had one come loose where the knock sensor bolts to the block. Rather a pain to get at being honest, best from underneath I found when the car is on axles stands.
It seemed asthough the power had gone, as soon as I tightened the bolt the car sprung into life.

Is it located on the block around the oil filter area ?

What is the sensor that is bolted down just below the TPS then as that is just a short peice of wire which connects to the front of the cable tray ? thought that was the knock sensor

The knock sensor from memory is below the exhaust manifold and behind the dipstick.
On the cable tray that runs along side the plenum and above the cam cover on the passenger side, there is an electric connector that come out of the tray near the dipstick, this is the passenger side knock sensor. Follow that wire if you can't find it

So the knock sensor could have been disturbed whilst I did a recent oil cahge when I gave that siude of the car a good clean ,albeit with just cloths .The excess wire from the cable tray is then held in place by a small metal clip onto a "L" shaped bracket around the top of the dipstick.

Is the other sensor that plugs into the end of the cable tray with just a short peice of wire and sits directly below the TPS ( throttle position sensor ) then the cam shaft sensor for the n/s bank.?

Is the knock sensor effected by poor quality petrol as have had similar issues with rough running and lack of power now for around a week and am starting to suspect dodgy fuel...if so wouldn,t both banks have a similar effect on the knock sensors ?and bring up codes for both sides.

The connector at the front of the said cable tray is the Camshaft Sensor yes.
Would not have thought you could move the sensor when bolted to the block, having said that if it was not tight then suppose it could... I would check to see if its tight.
I can send you one in the post to try if not, to see if that improves things, as new they are around £80 each.

Will have a closer look in the morning as car is running like a " nail "

Would a plug not firing cause 17 to be strored as feeling the way it is driving almost feels like it only running on 5 although still gets a move on along the motorway ,just when you put your foot down it coughs and doesn,t want to accelerate too smartish !

If I remember rightly yours is a mini facelift, so any HT problem will not put a fault code up

Magnacor leads so doudt if they are the problem,and dispack was replaced with new Bosch unit less than 12 months ago.Odd though as just checked and new plugs also fitted less than 10k ago

Have you had alot of rain down there? I had a guys car today where water had got into his plug wells making his car missfire...

Not an abnormal amount of rain but snow did stay on car for some considerable time as it didn,t move for nearly a week so may be the thaw that has flooded the plug wells.

Will remove each plug this morning and have a good look...bet if that is the problem its going to be # 6 plug well..the bugger to get at

If it is the case that water is in the plug wells, have a look at the rubber discs that are supposed to be pressed up against the inner side of the scuttle panel where the wiper spindles come through.
What happens is water goes through when this rubber disc seal is not sealing properly then soaks the sound proofing with is sponge, when no more water can be held within the sponge it drips it over the passenger side cam cover. If over night this happens the engine heat can not evaporate it, and so does go down the plug wells. Get some sikaflex or tigerseal. Then makes sure the rubber disc is sealed to the scuttle
I know a few other members have this problem.

Whats the best way to cure this Daz ? I know its silicon sealant on the join between the two parts of the panel,but not sure that would work around the wiper spindles.

Just added it to the post mate. Even happens when the coil packs are fitted too, so not just the cars with leads.
Seal the rubber disc to the scuttle with sikaflex or similar, them make sure the scuttle is down properly ( seen alot that have been removed then not fitting back down properly, leaving a big gap around the spindle) should fit snug

Think you may well have diagnosed the problem "Doctor Daz"

When I clkeaned the breathers and did oil change last week I removed the scuttle as it gave me a bit more access.In my haste to get it all back together as needed car for work later fitted scuttle but didnt fit the rubber foam washer seal under the scuttle on the wiper spindle as couldn,t find it .

As didn,t think it would make a huge difference juts fitted 2 large rubber washers and put it back together.

Following day did have a missfire but thought it was an air leak and checked all usual culprits but in hind sight it did rain that evening so bet water has gone onto back of engine.

Will need to make up some temporary washers as both have now gone...I know the bit you mean and if you have 2 in your stock room and wouldn,t mind posting them off for a  " pint " I would be very gratefull.
