Any of you guys have experience of breaking a car on your drive?

I have a Mondeo which I'm thinking of breaking on my drive.

But if there is only a shell left afterwards, will a scrappy take it? Will they pick up a shell on a loader?

I called a scrap yard to collect an Astra for me last year, he suggested that he wouldn't pick up a car if it was missing doors etc. I suspect they all have their own 'rules' though. You'd be better off phoning a local scrappy first ................ IMHO

You could always try the local scrap metal collectors - of which most people have several.
I had no trouble convincing one to pick up the remains of a cavalier off my drive.

But then you have no way of notifying the DVLA it's gone - the new red V5's don't have a tick box for 'vehicle destroyed', you have to take the car (including VIN plates & v5) to a 'registered vehicle dismantler' ...

They've just made it more difficult to scrap your car yourself but not impossible. The V5C says:-

If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either tax it or tell us you are keeping it off the public road by making a SORN, until you take it to an ATF (authorised treatment centre) or tell us you no longer have it.

So, in theory, a letter to DVLA should suffice.

That is true - a friend of mine has recently tested that out..

Both scrappies at the Hythe in Colchester need the shell to have wheels on for them to collect it.You will also get approx.£30 more for the shell if you tow it in yourself. There used to be a couple of blokes (the Street brothers) who would come and pick it up with a Hiab,pay you cash,then take it down the hythe and weigh it in. I havent seen them for a few years,and Im not sure how the new regulations affect the way they used to operate.

As long as they have the required licence it`s OK. My shells get collected the same way

i had a vectra shell removed without problem 3 weeks back, reminds me i got to send log book off still
