Moving stateside?
« on: 18 February 2012, 12:56:09 »

I have been looking at options for next year if I end up unemployed (which looks like a good chance of it happening now)

The deal I made with the wife when we moved here from France was that once I was done with this job we would move to the US.  I have no problems with that so long as my salary gives me a decent quality of life.  I have been looking at IT Security jobs which I fit the bill for (or will do after all the training I have on offer) and HELLO!  $60-140k!

I have been pricing up rentals, cars, taxes, cost of living etc and I am pretty sure it works out to very favourable indeed!

I know!  The missus said that we should get an economical car like a prius.  I said, that's your car sorted then.  I'll go for another Jag XF (R?) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Don't you mean "Pious"?  ;D ;D

I've never been in to Jags myself, but my brother has the 3 litre XF twin turbo and I have to say it's an awesome bit of kit.......mind you it wants to be for the price tag (£50K).

Guffer,

Moving to the USA is something I've always wanted to do myself, but for me at the moment it's only always going to be a dream.

Not sure if the link below is a starting point for informatin that you're after or if it's helpful at all.
But hey, maybe worth a look?.

And good luck if you go ahead and move there (I say that with jealous gritted teath  ;D) :y

That is the retirement plan, I did consider moving straight there to work on boats but the wife has basically poo-pooed this idea :(

word of warning,  there are significant costs over and above our normal UK expenditure to be taken in to account......

some years ago, I worked for a US guitar manufacturer, and a relocation to the US permanently was one of the proffered options.....

i looked quite closely at it,  (bearing in mind we had 5 kids)  ,  and decided not to take the $100k job, as i calculated that the insurance costs for medical,  life, home,   legal , etc, were substantial, and the taxes were not great,  and then the whole question of adjusting everything for State sales taxes ,  and the cost of housing , under very specific regulations , all in all made the entire idea unworkable....   $200k would have been comfortable

it might have been doable if i didn't have 5 kids

but still far from the bonanza the numbers at first imply.

All the British people I know that have moved over to the USA and it's in double figures, who were either electronic engineers, software developers or top computer based graphic artists, have never looked back. None of them have returned to the UK and they have all got US citizenship. For people with technical skills, it always seems to be a one way trip.  ::)

Good luck and if you can get a good job, go for it.  :y

No kids, I can go on the wife's medical insurance at little extra cost (works for a US airline but is based here in the UK) and I can get a green card automatically through marriage.

Plus the wife will be working while I job hunt so we will have her income and my savings  :y

I thought you were a Doctor...... :-\ :-\ ::) :-[

At the $60k end of that spectrum, IMHO, you'd have to be living somewhere very cheap to have a good standard of life - parts of Texas, Arizona, Detroit (the latter may have a bit of a crime problem). The upper end would give you a decent quality of life everywhere but in the centre of the major cities (like New York, Manhattan etc where you need to be one of the super rich to afford anything but a shoe box).

I've spent quite a bit of time looking at the price of everything out there recently as the opportunity came up recently to relocate to Seattle - I'd have been looking for somewhere between $120 and $130k to maintain the standards I have here (PM me if you want to know what I earn here - I have no qualms sharing it with you, just not with everyone ;D).. turns out Seattle, at least, is not as cheap as I'd like (actually it's quite expensive, sadly!).

Ultimately the mortgage on this place put the kybosh on it, though :(
