No Throttle Respense
« on: 18 February 2012, 22:58:06 »

HI Folks, Newbie here with a problem.

I've been lurking for the last couple of weeks since taking ownership of a 2002 2.2 CD Auto and have picked up a lot of useful information.  Car is a minter but has an irritating intermittent fault, it starts fine but I've absolutely no response when pressing down the accelerator pedal.

I've tried searching but to be honest there seems to be so many possible reasons that I'm confused.

Shortly after I picked up the car from the dealer the car with the spanner light came on and would disappear when the car was stopped and restarted.  Went back to the dealer and arranged to have it looked at, in the meantime continued to drive the car and noticed the light would come on usually when cruising at around 1,500 RPM at 30 MPH.  Sometimes it would come on within 5 minutes of setting off and other times it would be 25-30 minutes before coming on. Some journeys would be fine with no light but this was rare, most times the light would come on.  Then the problem with no throttle appeared.

Dealer took the car and had codes read, said it was the Throttle Body was the problem.  He didn't tell me the exact codes and after a lengthy wait eventually sourced a replacement Throttle Body.  Picked up the car on Friday and everything seemed fine, car starts fine and no light coming on.  However just been out tonight and the no throttle problem has returned.

Hoping some of you helpful knowledgeable people will know what's causing this and can offer some advise on a fix.  Really love the car and would hate to have to ask for my money back and go looking for something else as there's not many nice Omegas found where I live.

Sounds like a sensor, but if you do the pedal test and post up the results you'll get some proper advice  :y

Welcome to the mele!

Not having a 2.2 I can only guess, apart from getting the fault code, I'd look at connections at both the accelerator itself & the throttle body.  :y

Go back to the dealer and insist on the codes being read again properly, and the car being fixed.Ask for a printout or list of the codes so you can post them up here. ;)

Welcome to OOF :)

I know little to nothing about the 2.2 ... but I believe it is a FBW (fly by wire) throttle system like my 3.2

No throttle cable but a sensor on the accelerator pedal which sends a signal to the motor on the throttle body.

Two areas to check then ... plug/socket at the accelerator and plug/socket on the throttle body .. and maybe the wiring inbetween .. but that is probably in a loom and difficult to follow.

Ensure the connections are clean and "well made" .. no looseness at all. As the problem is intermittent I'm guessing that some electrical connection is being broken under certain conditions.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I'll be contacting the dealer first thing on Monday.

Just a few other details that might help diagnose the problem.  When the fault occurs the engine idles higher than normal at around 1200 RPM and there is a very slight drop when the accelerator pedal is pushed to the floor which would imply that the pedal is sending a signal.  The other thing I have noticed is when you turn the key in the ignition until the dash lights come on but before you start the engine there is a low whining sound like a fuel pump noise.  If I wait until this noise stops before attempting to start the car the throttle works, is it something daft I'm doing when I'm starting the car?
