Juddery startup.
« on: 21 February 2012, 17:52:30 »

Right one of my beemers has a very very poor startup from stone cold, I always leave it for the glow plugs to warm, however when it starts it's judders around like an old tractor, feels like it is heavily misfiring. After about 10 seconds it clears and runs absolutely perfect. Any ideas what this could be as it really is driving me mental now to be honest. It's a 231 BHP 3.0 diesel, I've had to ask on here because no one else seems to want to give me answer.

3 possibilities, glow plugs , glow plugs controller , injectors.. :-\

I just remembered how much I spend for a hot starting issue on a normal fuel car >:(

Always starts first time, it's just the initial startup in hitch it really really feels poorly.

See I'm thinking either rail pressure sensor, or glow plugs, or the glow plug control unit. I should point out the car pulls fantastically well an is very very good on fuel, however, it does if you give it some properly end up in limp mode.

I suspect a leaky injector..........if it was rail pressure then it would cause heavy acceleration issues.

If it was glow plugs it would just not fire, a modern diesel will pretty much always combust once a single cylinder fires and the crank speed is raised above the starter motor speed.

Probably is :(. I'll have to get it on a smooth running test and pinpoint the injector with the fault.

Took it to my mechanic, got him to give it a good thrashing, absolutely stunk of diesel, anyway, popped the engine cover off and the leak off pipe is snapped, and squirting fuel all up the joint. New part ordered, ready to be fitted tomorrow.
