Close friend of mine has been having some problems with her car, loosing coolant, over pressuring etc. Header tank stank of exhaust fumes, so popped the head off it for a look, tonight.

It's the 1.2 16v. Chain driven engine.

Really not a bad job at all. Chain setup is actually a peice of cake.

Evidence once the head was off, suggests it's been "K-Sealed" in the past!! Guess that's finally let go, so time for a proper job!



Here you see the chain setup. Sump bolts come up through the timing chain cover too.

Thankfully we can work on it at her place, 'cos I have three Omegas at mine, at the moment!!

How come the oil pressure sensor isn't leaking? I thought they all leaked.

She paid for the chain kit to be changed at a garage, around three months ago. There is NO WAY they did the work. All the evidence suggests that timing chain cover, and the ancils that need to be removed to get to it, have not been off in a long long time, if ever...


I think her brother said the aux belt was paid to be done at the same time, yet it's old, brittle, cracked... in three months? 

Needless to say, it'll all be done as it should be this time around. Maybe she'll learn, buying me a few beers works out cheaper and safer than getting ripped off by garages

Ah! That'll be what the problem was with the car belonging to the wife of one of the lads at work. She coasted to a small garage as the oil pressure light came on, seems as though she got away with it cos all it cost was £30 to sort out.

As a tip, drop the sump off as without doing this its a 50:50 chance that the timing cover seals properly!

Use a dab of threadlock on the cam cap bolts.

Check the water pump, as these often leak.

Hi James

From the pic it seems the inlet cam sprocket has a different centre to the exhaust cam, if this is so then either its had a pattern chain kit fitted or not had all the parts fitted.

With a new GM kit the sprockets are the same an you will need to follow a field remedy otherwise the car won't start again.

We got her back together on Saturday. Started on the first turn, and sounds sweet - no more cooling issues.
