Corsa B Hunting & poor idle
« on: 26 February 2012, 19:53:17 »

My next door neighbour has bought her daughter a 1998 Corsa B 1.0 12v but has a bad hunting & idle problem plus some times when driving it misses & the EML comes on but if you floor it stops the running rough & the light goes out plus if you put the electrical system under load ie: fan on full speed, heated rear screen etc any clues?

done one recently. egr valve stuck (should be a code) and three of the five inlet manifold bolts broke letting in air.

Can I block off the EGR?

Yes, you can buy a plate off ebay for a couple of pounds. It's an easy job to do - but the coolant flows via the valve so you will need to drain/replace the coolant. Unlike the Omega, there isn't a drain for the rad, so draining the system will be via removing a hose. Hint; the easy one to get at is the junction of the pipe from the header tank to the rad bottom hose. It comes off easily and can also be bent downwards allowing most of the coolant to be drained.

It might be worth noting the operating temp also. It should be at about the 92 level when warm, if its too low then the stat needs replacing. It's an easy enough job, also, when the engine is operating @ the correct temp its a lot happier and uses less fuel.

A bit of progress, changed the TPS & it seems to have sorted 90% of the problems but it still loses power & splutters when sitting at a constant speed around 40/50 & the EML comes on plus if when it's driving OK & you push the throttle to the floor it has a really big flat spot, any clues?

Mass Airflow Meter failure would be my guess.
