Improving General Chat
« on: 27 February 2012, 20:37:02 »

OK, warrants a thread of its own, other had to be locked....

So, how can we allow some level of fun, without being abusive to members?  We have a global audience, so we cannot have the mindless BNP mentality that was creeping in.

The jokes became overwhelming - page after page of 'jokes' that weren't even funny 20yrs ago, so got shifted off into 1 thread. Politics threads became the same way - thread after thread of politics that only interested a handful.

Speaking, for once, as an Admin, we can't have a chat section swamped with a single genre - that looks even more cliquey that normal banter.

So, any ideas?

Set up an Omega Amigos lounge section.

You can only access it and post when you have reached say 250 posts AND are enabled by request from the hopeful would be Amigo.

The lounge wouldn't be accessible by the global audience only by those who had posted 250 or whatever limit was deemed Ok ANd had actually asked to be in the lounge.

The name isn't important - it could just as easily be called something else.

How about positive things?

Being relatively new here, I have glanced around the forum, and geez, there is a serious amount of moaning. Ain't gonna harp on about it, but it does get a little tedious.

How about the good things that happened this week, holiday plans, how you'd love to go on safari in Kenya as a mate just came back and told you how great it was, the heating worked all winter faultlessly, the cam cover does NOT leak, the handbrake is GOOD, had a good day at work, got a great bargain today, beat my previous mpg record, on and on and on.
You get the drift. Yeah, had a good days drifting, for eg

One of our founding priciples is that everybody is equal.  I reckon that idea may be classed as divisive, or them-and-us. Is it much different from 'paid VIP' type memberships that exist of so many other forums?

Varche, like the idea but shouldn't it be ''Omego''?  ;D

I been away and just come back. Seems there's been a bit of a tiff.

I used to post in gen. chat all the time but my posts which I only ever intended to bring humour sometimes got taken out of context. That's why I don't really bother posting any more.

Have to say though I do keep a very occasional eye in this section.... not sen anything too bad. Is there really a problem or just one incident?  :-\

Whilst some of those may be better discussed in Car Chat, I like the idea. A good varied discussion.

When OOF started, because the value of Omegas was higher, many members did them up as project cars. Was always good to read the progress.  We still have one or 2 talking about Omega engines in kit cars etc, always a worthwhile read, but due to the value of Omegas, this isn't the norm.

Imo it cant be improved by design. It is what it is because the people posting make it what it is.It used to be something different, but that was due partially to different people posting then, and maybe partially due to people who are still here getting used to one another, becoming a bit jaded, blase ?
Istr there have been a few attempts in the past to rejuvinate it,bring back the fun, but it didnt work.It would have to happen naturally for it to work imo.

Is that a case of the rules are too strict? Or have, in an attempt to cure the swamping we used to get last year with political and joke threads, we have discouraged people from freely chatting?

As I said lately I think there is no serious trouble but how I see now the more stars you have the more right you can get and this is depending actually only on number of stars ( number of posts ) but not on your general attitude....anyhow they should be in harmony to my mind.

Not sure I understand your post Laszlo  :-\

We have always said everyone is the same, and will be treated as such.

The only deviation is a requirement to have 250 posts to sell (sadly, but we have been burned  :'().

Maybe I'm idealistic, but I would like that principle to remain, so a Newbie's viewpoint is every bit as valid as a 60,000 post veteran's...
