World faces a global shortage. Are those Rods2's cellar photos?
I am not surprised as we have seen vines in Spain pulled out and replaced by other crops that maybe attract a better EU subsidy. same thing is happening with asparagus and wheat being replaced by olive trees.
-
Asparagus probably not helped by how much we produce here...
-
It's not me honest. ::)
PR story to push up the price of wine IMO. New world is continuing to increase production. the problem with command economies like the EU CAP is you either have surpluses or shortages as the people making the decisions are expected to be all seeing and all knowing, which is impossible of course, whereas with capitalism, the investment is made where the money goes.

Oh dear, I suppose I'll get the blame for overdoing it

The other day I purchased 24 bottles of First Cape limited reserve merlot from Sainsbury
Supposedly £7.48 a bottle, it was half price at £3.74.
Figure in a further 25% reduction when you buy six or more bottles and a £6 voucher because I spent over £60 and it's a significant saving. :y
So.....24 x £3.74 equals...£89.76
Less 25%......................£22.44
Less £6 voucher.............£6.00
Total............................£61.32
Which if you divide by 24 comes to.........£2.55 a bottle.
Okay, it may be 'plonk' but it's 13.0% Vol plonk and fine for my unsophisticated palate. :y :y

Vin is for the ladies. Whiskey is for the men. I blame the EU.

I must be a repressed homosexual because I drink red wine, 5% bottled lager, and gin. :-\ :-\ :'( :'(
I'm also partial to a drop of 'real ale'........although I don't have a beard. :y ;D ;D

I go here . .
http://www.calaiswine.co.uk/
Cross channel on Eurotunnel, around £60 but sometimes less ( occasional midweek daytrip deals at £23 return !)
Home to Calais and back about 200 miles, say £50 or so petrol
100 bottles drinkable wine (one reason for having an Omega Estate!) at £2 per bottle = £200
Total spend £310
So £3.10 per bottle but much less as you buy more, plus a day out in France shopping for horsemeat in Auchan supermarket or wherever
I do also tend to buy a few cases of slightly more expensive stuff
One thing I don't know is the cost of a private liver transplant :o

I suspect a reporter has just bought a majority share in a vineyard somewhere, last time I looked there was still plenty of wine. The problem is finding the decent years/regions most of which have been snaffled up and kept in storage. For example a 2003 bordeaux is now very tough to find.

I don't care........................
Ive got my beer on the side board here... ;D
Only the landed gentry of Lincolnshire can afford decent wine.

A tent in a field is not the same as a country estate, Albs. ;) ;D ;D

I believe that the actual value of the wine in a £5 bottle of plonk is about 20p. :'( :'(
Booze is taxed to death in this country, sadly. :'(

I dont use them......and i dont think its in any of the packets you add to the wine......you usually get in the kits....concentrated grape juice (the more expensive the kit the more you get), yeast, yeast nutrient, stabiliser, and liquid finings. You just add water and sugar (the more expensive kits you dont add sugar)

Yup. Booze'n'fuel'n'fags. The country would go tits up if we all stopped buying those things.

Spot on. The maths are much better in Spain thankfully. :y

It is much cheaper in France to bulk buy wine and bottle it yourself. Is the same true in Spain?
When I used to go to my house in France regularly all of my beer, wine and spirits was imported, where it is much cheaper and what I saved would pay for my Ferries, so it was effectively a free holiday.
-
good quality wine and particularly sherry is cheap enough not to go looking for bulk buys. I always gasp at the price supermarkets charge for asparagus. We buy a mano (about 2 kilos) for 5 to 8 euros.
I do remember a few years back being at a Spanish supermarket near the French Med border. It was full of French shoppers and they were buying ,on draught, Spanish wine and sherry. Choice of about 20 different products. You took your own containers and filled up like you do at a petrol station. Then you got a ticket with bar code and price to stick on your container. Made me smile because at the time booze cruises were popular to buy French products at Calais.

My son who is involved in the wine trade, drew my attention to this . . .

::) mmm a wine shortage just before Xmas ? this couldn't possibly be a marketing ploy could it , or am I getting cynical in my old age ?

I'm curious how much is a brand new liver ;D

Depends where you live and upon your social position. In china you can just kidnap a local farmer and have his for nothing :y

I expect a Chinese farmer's liver would be just as pickled as they make their own rice wine. ;)

Yes :) ... and also they generally only have one kidney, as the other has been sold to pay off their gambling debts! ;D

If people have enough money they can buy just about anything.......including a new liver.
However, at exactly the same time some street kid in Rio or Bombay wakes up in the gutter with a large infected wound, and minus his spleen or kidney. :-\ :-\ :-\ :(
It's a cruel world. Always has been. :-\
