Only the landed gentry of Lincolnshire can afford decent wine.

I believe that the actual value of the wine in a £5 bottle of plonk is about 20p. :'( :'(

Booze is taxed to death in this country, sadly. :'(

The other day I purchased 24 bottles of First Cape limited reserve merlot from Sainsbury

Supposedly £7.48 a bottle, it was half price at £3.74.

Figure in a further 25% reduction when you buy six or more bottles and a £6 voucher because I spent over £60 and it's a significant saving. :y

So.....24 x £3.74 equals...£89.76

Less 25%......................£22.44

Less £6 voucher.............£6.00

Total............................£61.32

Which if you divide by 24 comes to.........£2.55 a bottle.

Okay, it may be 'plonk' but it's 13.0% Vol plonk and fine for my unsophisticated palate. :y :y

I make my own from kits......once you have the equipment you need, works out about £1 a bottle for something fairly nice  :y .....obviously goes up in price if buy expensive wine kits

As did I many moons ago. :y........only I could never did rid of the taste of campden tablets. :-\ :-\ :-\

I dont use them......and i dont think its in any of the packets you add to the wine......you usually get in the kits....concentrated grape juice (the more expensive the kit the more you get), yeast, yeast nutrient, stabiliser, and liquid finings. You just add water and sugar (the more expensive kits you dont add sugar)

It is much cheaper in France to bulk buy wine and bottle it yourself. Is the same true in Spain?

When I used to go to my house in France regularly all of my beer, wine and spirits was imported, where it is much cheaper and what I saved would pay for my Ferries, so it was effectively a free holiday.

good quality wine and particularly sherry is cheap enough not to go looking for bulk buys. I always gasp at the price supermarkets charge for asparagus. We buy a mano (about 2 kilos) for 5 to 8 euros.

I do remember a few years back being at a Spanish supermarket near the French Med border. It was full of French shoppers and they were buying ,on draught, Spanish wine and sherry. Choice of about 20 different products. You took your own containers and filled up like you do at a petrol station. Then you got a ticket with bar code and price to stick on your container. Made me smile because at the time booze cruises were popular to buy French products at Calais.

I expect a Chinese farmer's liver would be just as pickled as they make their own rice wine.  ;)

Yes  :) ... and also they generally only have one kidney, as the other has been sold to pay off their gambling debts!  ;D
