Omega General Help / Re: Tech 2 (Where can I buy one legit)
« on: 14 December 2007, 17:18:49 »
Hi,

As said earlier, don't get a USB one.

The com port ones do work and will read engine, geabox and body fault codes and reset them.

However, they need a decent laptop and they need a built in com port as converters don't seem to work either. This means that if you have a new style laptop with loads of power but no com port or an old laptop with a com port but not enough power, you'll need to ask santa for a laptop to go with it.

I asked this forum some time ago what laptops worked and the consensus was anything over 1ghz should do. I bought a Dell C640 for under £100 off ebay which has a Pentium 4 1.8ghz chip. The cable works well with this.

Only other thing to say is some of the codes are in hungarian due to the software but you should still be able to get the gist.

Hope this helps.

Omega General Help / Re: dash bulb types/names
« on: 27 October 2007, 19:45:40 »
Hi, assuming you mean the ones in the instrument cluster.

They are the same push type as now fitted to sidelights/ high level brake lights etc. This is a link to the type of bulb fitment http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/T10-501-W5W-SIDELIGHT-BULBS-BLUE-WEDGE-BLUE-SideMarker_W0QQitemZ260174218233QQihZ016QQcategoryZ72235QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem .

They seem to be referred to as 501 type.

However, I say type of fitment as although sidelight bulbs will fit, they are 5 watt and the instrument ones are lower, I think either 1.2 watt or 2 watt .... when I did mine the writing had mostly burnt off buthere was a 2 in there somewhere. If you put 5 watt ones in, I reckon you'll need to turn the dimmer down making the clock etc harder to see. I know because I had to put in 5 watt ones to replace bust ones and I couldn't get the right ones.

From memory I think there are 5 bulbs in the instrument cluster.

Cheers

Hi, just to check does it only make a noise when the car is moving ?

If moving only, I would check front wheel bearings, probably one getting loose more than failing. The noise would be the disk scraping on the brake caliper when it moves. When you press the brakes, this will stabilise it a bit in relation to the caliper and the noise go away. Worth checking sooner rather than later well ...... 3 wheels on my wagon !!

If it occurs also when stopped, I would say either clutch related or input shaft.

Omega General Help / Re: EML on  over the weekend.
« on: 05 October 2007, 09:31:27 »
Hi, This may be completely off the wall but I have a similar problem with my Saab 3.0 Arc which has the similar engine to the earlier Omega's.

On this I have changed both lambda's and also the cat and still have the problem (cat was bust anyway). I think I know what it is because my simple ODBII reader also gives a code for the MAF sensor at the same time (changed that too) but a Tech 2 test doesn't, just the cat inefficiency.

However I noticed that it comes on when on little or no throttle so investigated for air leaks and have tracked one down to the servo which does lose vacuum when the engine is switched off. Got the servo but haven't got around to fitting it yet.

I would suggest putting post MAF sensor air leaks on your list to check as this could be confusing the ECU with it getting different readings from the what it expects, throwing on the EML light.

Hope this is useful.

Omega General Help / Re: Laptop Tech2
« on: 16 October 2007, 22:45:46 »
Mmmmm ... interesting.

The laptop I tried it on was a Toshiba 4200, I now know of another guy also tried one on a 4200 without success as well. The 4310 is not far away in spec. My neighbour has a 4600 with an 850 chip. I will try and borrow that for a few minutes.

This is why I think a list may be useful to members as the speed issue doesn't seem to be the only one.

Thanks for the info so far.

In answer to the question about what it will do, if I can get it to work, it will read and clear fault codes, engine, body, g/box etc and also activate Cruise control and other functions.

Whether or not this is less or the same as a real Tech2 I don't know but should cover most of it.

Cheers

Omega General Help / Laptop Tech2
« on: 16 October 2007, 09:48:19 »
Hi, I have seen many references on the forum to the Tech2 units available on ebay that use the com port on a laptop. It appears that there are issues with some laptops not working with these units. Has anyone got one of these working on a laptop and if so what type of and model of laptop is it working on.

Perhaps, if there are quite a few, it could be worth creating a list.

Thanks
Mike

Hi, If they say a slight coolant leak, surely they must have seen fluid in which case I would have thought they would have seen where it was from.

Having watched a couple of guys change my belt who really knew what they were doing (they used to build the v6 engines when they were made at elsmere port) I could see that it is tight getting the ram system out out between the engine and the radiator pretty much right the way accross and a coupld of extremeties which could cause damage if they weren't taken off carefully.

Having said that I gather a common cause of leaks on the omega is the heater distribution control that at the back of the engine, not to expensive as a part but a bugger to get at. Would be a bit if a coincidence though but this would have nothing to do with the cambelt change.

If they do say radiator, any other part at the front or you don't know what they mean, you should ask them to see the old part and get them to show you where it came from. If you aren't satisfied you should take the old part away with you so you could get a 2nd opinion as to the cause.

Hope this helps.

Omega General Help / Re: Black head lamps?
« on: 05 October 2007, 10:23:17 »
If you can flatten the beam with the adjuster you should be OK for an MOT. The rules should be the same for cars and Motor bikes and there are thousands of imported bikes in the UK that use a flat beam solution (one in my garage) and some aftermarket lamps are manufactured with a flat beam so they can be sold anywhere.

Omega General Help / Re: EML on 2002 plate, how to get rid?
« on: 04 October 2007, 00:27:59 »
Hi, I have a generic ODBII reader and it works fine with the Omega so well worth the investment.

Another alternative if you don't mind inputting the radio code is to disconnect the battery for a while. I think 10 minutes usually does it

Sorry if this isn't alowed but I have a crank sensor on ebay at the moment as mine went and I bought the wrong one first time as mine is a later 3.2. It has an oblong connector which I think should fit yours but check the connector with the one shown on ebay.

It's £30 by the way and has not been fitted.

It is an easy fix having just done it today using the advice from the link you been given.

Good luck

Omega General Help / Re: Urgent Water Pump Help..
« on: 01 October 2007, 23:09:35 »
I might get blasted for this by those that have more experience but how many miles has the car done ? My ex police 3.2 had full history and showed the water pump wasn't changed until it failed at 138k miles. If yours has low mileage, may be better to clean up the vauxhall one and put it back if you still have it.

Good luck

If you are worried about setting the airbag off, disconnect the battery and leave it a few minutes before starting work.

Good luck

Omega General Help / Re: Ex plod 3.2 MV6 Auto cuts out
« on: 01 October 2007, 22:58:33 »
Firstly sorry for not responding to the recent posts. I have been away a couple of times and for some reason haven't had the reminder emails.

It's fixed !!! First time I've had time to do it and it hasn't been pi**ing down. Took about an hour but I reckon 40 minutes of that was on the phone !!

Didn't have to take the scuttle off in the end, because it was bust, it lifted far enough to get at the connector and I routed the new cable through the brake lines without ties. Plenty clear of the exhaust, no hot pipes either and plenty of slack for engine movement.

I did get the wrong part first time around, oblong connector instead of the oval one so the oblong connector one is on ebay now for £30 if anyone needs one.

To answer the post I missed, the difference between the old and new scuttle is that the screen washers are in the scuttle on the new one instead of the on the bonnet. Reckon they bust it trying to take out the cables running through the bulkhead. They just cut them on the end. Just need to fix the airbags now, fault cose say low resitance on the squab which could be the squab if I'm lucky but might also be a short caused buy the burnt out wire I had on a previous post.

No real issues plod wise with it at all. The extra wiring I just take out bits at a time when I have the relevant area stripped down. As a car it is great, handles well for a big car and now I've had the belt done and got the timing right on both banks of valves it goes well too. The mechanic who did the belts remarked on how tight the engine was, in fact they took it in turns to turn the engine over to check it all. It seemed more like a 50k engine rather than the 160k it's actually done. I suppose that'll be it having been serviced every 8k miles instead of the the 20k in the handbook. Would say it drives more like 50k miles too. The only sign of wear is the occasional sticking of the powersteering when stopped on full lock with the engine idling but it is very slow idle at just 500rpm which wouldn't help.

I'd certainly buy another one. Where else can you get a big 02 plate estate car for under £2k that goes like stink. Hope that helps with the off topic and sorry it's a bit late.

Thanks a lot again for all the advice and comments and if I can be of any help to someone that has or is thinking of getting an ex plod, feel free to ask.

Cheers
Mike
