Omega General Help / Re: Kinda lost
« on: 30 December 2008, 03:41:17 »
there are no other codes

the vacuum line for the fuel pressure regulator had snapped and i replaced it with thin rubber hose, might that be the problem ?

What happens if the FPR gets no vacuum ?

P0171 and P0174 indicate lean condition detected by Lambda sensor. Is it possible that there's an air leak into the induction / exhaust systems ?

I believe that is possible that I didn't put back together perfectly

Does the engine idle smoothly and at a sensible speed?

600 rpm, every once in awhile the rpm will fluctuate about 75-100 rpm. It doesn't happen often

When under load does the engine still run smoothly but lacking power or is it misfiring with added throttle or just bogging down?

The engine runs smoothly until anything over 25% load (as per OBD connected to my Computer) or about 2000-2500 rpm. The colder the outside temp is the lower the rpm threshold is, about 3000-3200 during the summer and 1600-2200 yesterday.

the engine just acts as if the gas was turned off, if i let off the pedal it's fine again. OBD shows the O2 sensors going from normal operation to 0 when it cuts out.

How was the MAF and Ignition system tested? Does the car drive remotely OK with the MAF completely disconnected?

MAF is fine Ignition too. The strange thing is I see no difference when i disconnect it

Does this model have EGR and secondary air? Might be worth blocking these temporarily just in case they have gone leaky although I would expect the greatest issues to be at idle and reducing with load.

I know it has an air pump but i am not sure of EGR

Could the vacuum lines for the air intake being in the wrong places  ?

long winded but hopefully helpful, thanks alot

OK I need a lil' help

1998 catera/omega mv6 cant rev to save it's life !
I changed the Valve gaskets last year around this time and ever since then there has been a problem with accelerating, that gets worse as the ambient temperature goes down. Now that NY temps are 10 degrees f the car wont move, The car always struggles to get up even slight hills but is undriveable now.

As of late my legs have become temporarily useful as mams on a bovine so I have had to 'outsource' my auto repairs and this is what we found.
Fuel pump and filter - Fine/new
Ignition                   - Fine
MAF                        - Fine

Sensors seem fine except for the occasional p0171 and p0174
The mechanic says it seems like an air issue but he can't find it (not many people here are intimate with these cars) but I just wanted to get any ideas that you guys might be able to throw my way.

Thanks

OK I have an UK Tax question. If I am wrong please enlighten me

The way I understand the workings of UK taxes is that  incomes/state taxes do not include payment into building/maintaining roads, I believe this is the same through th EU. The roads are kept up through fuel tax, so only those who use them pay for it. If I am correct you gas tax is more than 1/2 the cost of the fuel itself.

In the US we pay Federal & local tax (Includes roads) plus @ $4.00+ a gallon, only about $1.25 is tax.

With fuel prices the way they are, bah I really don't think I'll be doing over 130 :)

In the states insurance companies only care about the payments, they don't inspect the cars, states do to pass yearly inspection (at least in NY). You have to see what pieces of shite we have running around.

My normal driving is between 55-85 with occasional blasts over 100

Omega General Help / Re: Milky Oil Cap ?
« on: 10 May 2008, 23:25:06 »
water loss is about  half of the expansion tank (light comes on) 200-300 miles.

I recently replaced the HBV because of a leak, and have not seen another leak so I was suprised when I needed coolant. the first thing I thought was that the oil cooler went but there is no sign of anything mixing together.

I'm clueless

There is Steam coming out of the oil spout when I remove the cap and the engine is running. I am losing coolant too but it isn't going to the floor.

I am waiting for the Rad Cap to come in and I have a bad feeling about this.

no short runs
i'll give an example, did an oil change saturday and cleaned the cap and tube. 300 miles later some came back and if I look down the oil pipe it looks "steamed".

One thing I didn't put in the original post was that overnight the upper rad hose collapses and kinda goes flat but after running for a couple of minutes it goes back to normal. i dont get it

Omega General Help / Milky Oil Cap ?
« on: 06 May 2008, 17:38:11 »
I have a 1998 Catera 3.0 and it seems that the Oil Cap & Filler Tube have a mild milky coating on it. now comes the twist there is NO oil in the coolant or Milky stuff on the dipstick and the last oilchange the oil was brown only.

It seems to me that steam is getting into where it shouldn't be but short of seeing the crossover and oil cooler going south.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas ?

With 83,000 miles I should prolly change the filter.

The Multirams are free and will open if I pulse the motor over 4000 rpm

Don't know about the fuel pressure.

When I did the cover gaskets, I pinched a wire on the drivers side under the cover (I think it might have been the KS). The wire was along the front hump, the wire is intact but I don't know how many leads are in it).

I dont know the condition of the coil but the car idles fine and BTW the plugs are new Bosch Platinum +2's
