Omega General Help / Re: Battery terminal crimp.
« on: 07 February 2011, 17:15:14 »
Thinking about it again, could i maybe just cut away the damaged bit of lead (approx 2 inchs) and replace it with a small length of new lead and a new battery terminal?

Omega General Help / Battery terminal crimp.
« on: 07 February 2011, 16:45:33 »
Hi guys, after having trouble with flat batteries/ dim headlights etc and reading through other threads i think i have traced the problem to the crimp on the lead going to the battery posotive.(2001 2.2 petrol Omega)
I seem to have the typical symptoms, ie hot battery terminal and the lead itself looks frayed and white as it goes into the terminal and the insulation around it seems to have melted off.
I was thinking of replacing it with a new battery terminal and a length of battery lead from halfords, but cant trace where it goes and ultimatly ends up. I can trace it across the front of the engine and then it drops down behind the alternator. I can think i can also feel a wire coming out of it down below the alternator, but the main lead goes seems to go on.
Has anybody changed one of these before, or does anybody know where this lead ends up?
Many thanks in advance!!!!

Omega General Help / Snow Chains
« on: 20 December 2010, 18:16:28 »
Hi, anybody had any experience with using snow chains on an Omega? Had a few butt clenching moments in the last few days and just managed to get up roads with any sort of incline. How do they cope if say you hit a road that has been cleared? Are they worth the investment or would winter tyres do the same job? Any advice would be welcome!!

Hi guys, just a quickie. I'm after a timing belt kit and have found 2 what seem decent suppliers on the net and wondered if anybody had dealt with either of them and had experiences with price/quality? They are AUTOVAUX and LMF VAUXHALL? Many thanks for any comments.

Omega General Help / Oil seals
« on: 11 September 2010, 11:48:42 »
Hi guys, I've got a serious oil leak and am changing a few seals this week to try and cure it and was just wondering if anybody had any experience/problems/tips for any of the jobs im doing. The oil leak seems to be coming down the front of the engine(2001 2.2) and collecting on the tray at the bottom. I'm planning on changing the rocker cover gasket, camshaft seals and crankshaft seal. I'm losing about 1ltr a week.
Also i've read on previous threads about a vauxhall black sealant you can use on the rocker cover gasket to go where it bridges over the cams, anybody got a part number as my local dealership haven't heard of it. I've changed this gasket before to cure oil leaking into the spark plug wells and that was cured, but thinking maybe it could be now leaking from the front? Anybody know what torque the bolts on the rocker cover should be tightened down to?
Alot of questions i know but am trying to cover every angle to try and cure the leak, so any comments would be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance!!

Omega General Help / Re: Battery warning light

Just another quickie, somebody mentioned replacing the regulator in the alternator at a cost of approx £12. Where would i get one of these? Is it a vauxhall part or from the maker of the alternator?

Just looked on Halfords website and priced up a new battery terminal and cable for under a tenner so i think i'll give that a go. Many thanks for all the advice, and i will report back with hopefully a good result!

Just checked after a 20 min drive and the positive battery terminal was boiling hot. I saw what you meant about that crimp, played about with it while holding the multimeter on the battery terminals and it didnt seem to alter the reading, but you can see a few strands in the cable snapped and there was a sticker wrapped around it that had melted. Think im going to try a new cable from the alternator directly to the battery, along with a new battery clamp, and see where i go from there. Is there any specific cable i need to get, or could i just find it in Halfords?

I haven't noticed the battery connection getting hot, will feel it today, but i did notice the jump lead connection that was on my battery positive was really hot when i took it off. The battery connection seems tight, but it doesnt have any grease on it, which grease should i use? Where is this thick cable you are taking about Kevin? Did you mean under the battery tray?

If a direct cable does seem to fix it, can i use the cable as a permenant solution?

Sorry, i forgot to mention that i first noticed the battery light coming on really dimly a few months ago, whilst using the heated rear window, but not to the extent that it was causing the car not to start. I swapped it with an identical alternator from a friends omega that was being scrapped, and still the light came on, really dimly. My friend stated that he had never noticed a light coming on when he was using his car.

Went to a friends garage and got these results with a multimeter. Hope they make sense!
Battery without engine running = 12.52
Engine idling = 13.65
Engine idlling with full load = 12.35
Engine fast idling(2500 revs) = 13.84
Engine fast idling(2500 revs) with full load = 12.52

When you say check the security of the earth strap, am i simply checking that the bolts are tight?

Thanks for the quick reply. Not sure if there is a problem with the alternator as when i use the car in the day, with no lights, wipers etc on it seems fine. I just dont thing the alternator I've got just doesnt seem to be up to all the electric systems on at the same time, so was wondering if there was a more powerful/ upgraded one i could replace mine with?

Hiya again. I've been having a problem with my 2001 2.2 cd auto.
When im driving in the night, the battery light glows really dimly. It gets brighter when i put more things on, ie wipers, air con and then wont restart when i turn off the engine, so it is competly draining the battery.
I am using the car as a private hire vehicle so as well as the usual things, i have a radio, meter and a sat nav almost always plugged in.
Can i get a more powerful alternator as i really need to keep the air con on when working to keep the windows from misting up (hint to everybody, dont bother with rain x anti mist, useless!!). At the moment i am having to keep the engine running all night so as not to get stranded.
Many thanks in advance.
