Omega General Help / Re: Low power / fuel consumption on 2.5TD
« on: 08 August 2009, 22:32:17 »
Hi - Brackley's not a problem for me - it's only an hour up the M40...would sometime tomorrow be convenient for you?  Or maybe one evening during the week?

Thanks!

That sounds like it could be helpful, thank you.  I am in South Bucks so I guess it'll be an hour or so.  If you could let me know your location (pm me if you prefer) and when it'd be convenient I'll try and get up to see you (I'm not sure I can make it today...)

Omega General Help / Low power / fuel consumption on 2.5TD
« on: 08 August 2009, 11:58:48 »
Hi

I had the injection pump overhauled at the beginning of this year which fixed the 'warm start' problem I had - thanks to everyone for the help with this.  After this the car started and ran very well - but the fuel consumption seemed to increase by around 20%.

Last month (July) I noticed that the car seemed to be losing power.  It seems to happen most when the car is 'coasting' (i.e. under engine braking, not in neutral) down a longish hill - at the bottom of the hill the car seems to have no power and will only maintain speed - it doesn't have enough power to accelerate.  I'm not sure if this is linked but the fuel consumption seems to be getting better too - it's gone back to around 34-36mpg cross country and around 40mpg on a 70mph run... (it had gone down to 28mpg cross country and 34mpg on a run...)

I've carried out a paperclip test and get the following codes:

12 - start of sequence
14 - coolant temperature low
44 - incorrect boost pressure
49 - glow device error
95 - output amplifier defect
12 - start of sequence

(the explanations of the codes are from the forum pages...)

Any pointers or suggestions would be very welcome!

The car is a 1998 Omega Elite Estate 2.5 Turbo Diesel Automatic and its done 188k miles.

If anyone is nearby with Tech2 or similar and would be kind enough to take a look (and even be compensated for this!) I'm very happy to drive over - I'm near High Wycombe in Bucks

Thanks

Chris

Omega General Help / Pumping out oil?
« on: 13 February 2009, 15:53:18 »
Hi

I noticed on the Opie Oils website that an option instead of draining oil out of the sump is to pump it out via the dipstick holder using a manual pump...  Has anyone tried this - is it recommended or does it leave 'sludge' in the bottom of the sump (I drive diesel...)

I don't mind getting under the car, but it would seem to be a lot easier from the top!

Thanks in advance for the advice

Chris

Omega General Help / Re: 2.5TD difficult to start when warm
« on: 29 December 2008, 22:43:50 »
Hi

Just an update - and to say thanks for all the advice.  The problem was the injector pump, which is being overhauled and refitted - thanks for the input on this....

A further question - whilst all the inlet manifold etc. is off, is it worth changing the starter motor whilst its easy to get to, or am I just wasting money?  There haven't been any problems with the starter, but I seem to recall a thread that suggested they could have problems?

Thanks again

Chris

Hi

Thanks for the advice - I'll try that and report back.  I assume the injection pump is fairly easy to locate?  If you can give me some clues as to where it is I'd appreciate it as the engine isn't covered in my book.

Cheers

Omega General Help / 2.5TD difficult to start when warm
« on: 09 December 2008, 15:50:55 »
Hi

My 2.5TD Elite Estate starts straight away when the engine is cold enough to fire up the glow heaters, but when it's warm and the glow heaters don't come on it takes 5 to 10 seconds of cranking to start.... This seemed to happen after I'd changed the fuel filter, so I'm thinking 'airlock'...... But would this manifest itself only when warm and if it is and airlock what's the best way of getting rid of it?  I've undone the bolt on the top of the filter housing and get fuel out when the ignition is on....

Once it's started it coughs a bit for 10 seconds or so and then runs fine from then on

Thanks!

Omega General Help / Worth changing starter motor?
« on: 30 December 2008, 13:01:04 »
Hi

I've got the inlet manifold etc off the car as part of changing the injector pump (thanks for the all advice on this for the poor warm starting - it was the injector pump as suggested by The Boy and others...).  As I've currently got 'easy' access to the starter motor is it worth changing this now?  There aren't any problems with the starter motor but I seem to recall a thread that suggested it could give problems on my engine (2.5TD).... or am I just wasting money?

Thanks again for the advice

Omega General Help / Re: Where to buy HID?
« on: 09 December 2008, 16:00:21 »
Hi

Not late at all.... I'll try that too.  But if I've got all the lamps out etc. I'd rather have the bulbs to hand, and I guess I could return the bulbs if they're unopened and swap for a new ballast.....

Thanks again

Thanks for the input and rapid response - have ordered some Philips replacements from Autobulbs.

Cheers!

Omega General Help / Where to buy HID?
« on: 09 December 2008, 14:19:21 »
Hi

I've had my nearside headlamp fail on my '98 Elite Estate TD.  It tries to strike but doesn't make it... I assume that this is a bulb problem rather than a ballast problem?  AFAIK the bulb is orignal so I guess if it's done 10 years then that's OK.

I've seen some posts previously that the Philips bulbs (4300K) are the 'OEM' replacements - could anyone recommend the best place to buy these?  If tthese aren't the 'OEM' replacement could someone let me know what is and the best place to buy?

Is it recommended to replace both at the same time?

FWIW my local dealer quoted £117 for the bulb and £82 to fit it.  They wouldn't sell the bulb without fitting - apparently it has to be done in a special 'environment' (the wallet extraction room, no doubt).  Another dealer said they'd sell me the bulb, but if they didn't fit it then there would be no warranty.

Thanks for the help!

Omega General Help / Re: Oil change. Where should I go?
« on: 09 December 2008, 17:15:55 »
Didn't know about Autobahnstormers, so if it's possible to get the stuff at a decent price then I'd have to agree with the two previous posts and under these circumstances I'd do it myself.  There is an advantage in having a look under the car yourself and as Lizzie Zoom says you can check the oil coming out.

In fact, when I've finished writing this I'll get on to the Autobahnstormers website and find out how to get a card!

Thanks for the info

Hi Kate

I get mine done at National Tyre and I haven't had a problem.  Well, it's not strictly true - there was a case of a stripped sump plug a long time ago, which was a bit of an issue, but it's likely that it was over-tightened the previous time and I'm not sure that was at National Tyre.  Anyway, they got a guy in to helicoil to sump as a favour, so they sorted it all out.

The oil change costs £28 and that includes the filter and 6 litres of 10/40W semi synthetic (Castrol Magnatec, so good oil too).  I can't even buy the oil for that price so for me it's just not worth getting under the car.

In fact, because it's less than £30 I get it done every 3000 miles as the miles are clocking up a bit now.

Hope this helps!

Omega General Help / Re: Rear head restraints
« on: 28 November 2008, 23:27:37 »
Hi

It's a locking mechanism in the top of seat - with a push button release to tip the head restraint forwards for folding the seat down.  Unfortunately it seems that its made of plastic inside and a plastic catch that hold the seat seems to be broken.  Haven't dismantled them as I can tie the head restraints back as a temporary measure, but it isn't good long term.

I could try and post some pictures if it would help.....

Thanks for the info so far!

Omega General Help / Rear head restraints
« on: 28 November 2008, 09:43:27 »
Hi

I have an Omega 2.5TD elite estate.   The catches that hold the rear head restraints in the upright (i.e. for passenger use) position have broken, so both head restraints now fall forwards all the time into the 'seat folding' position..... Has anyone any ideas on how this can be repaired?

Many thanks!
