Omega General Help / Re: Starting Issues
« on: 23 March 2009, 13:26:35 »
I believe the sensor cable breaks down over a period of time due to the route taking it close to the hot exhaust pipe even though it has a protective heat shield conduit around it.
I think it was the easiest route to take at assembly.
There is a maintenance guide on this forum detailing how to re-route the cable across to the passenger side inner wing, and then on up to the plug at the rear top end of engine.
You can simply cut off the old plug and sensor and leave cable in original position after change-over.
And yes my intermittent starting problems went on for weeks until finally giving up all together. It was a lottery if car would start either in the morning or when i came out of work.
only the last time did i get a code 19 after doing paperclip test when engine started to stall at T/lights and junctions.
On 2nd sensor, Main dealer did not pick up any codes on their diagnotic kit until it actually failed. They had the car for nearly two weeks. They still put it back on its original route when it failed agin 12 months(just out of the waranty) later.

I'm on my 3rd crank sensor. First 2 gave only code 31. Car would start sometimes and when running gave no problems at all. But then hour or two later would fail to start.
Got two rides in with the van with big flashing lights to the dealers. Took them two weeks starting the car every day, which it did, before it finally failed and they diagnosed the crank sensor. They changed the sensor and all was well for 12 months. Then car started having intermittent starting problems again.
This time i changed it myself (not too difficult) and re-routed sensor away from exhaust and hot pipework as per guide on this forum. No problem since.
Get a Genuine VX sensor, read the forum guide and have a go yourself. Better access can be had by removing wipers and scuttle, but not essential.
Good luck.

Boo,
Did you check for spark as advised earlier? If you have spark then it could be fuel problem.
I have had couple of non starting problems during the past couple of years.(But mine is the 2.5 V6 ) The one time it was my fuel pump. Garage charged me £150.00 for the pump alone + labour, Over £300 total, but that was before i found this forum and i am sure someone on here will advise where to get cheaper pump if thats your problem.

Good Luck.

I have had both petrol pump and Crank Sensors go on my miggy. Most likely crank sensor but try a paperclip test again and hope for code 19. As a secondary test, if crank sensor is shot you should not get a spark when you crank engine. I tested mine for spark using an old timing light i had in the garage or i think Halfords do a spark plug tester.

There will be plenty more suggestions  from members to follow. Good luck. :y

Have to admit i had it jacked up as well. And i wasn't sure i could get at the the connector at the back of engine without scuttle cover off, as it looked pretty tight in there to me. You live and learn don't you. :)

Cost me £145 one year ago at main dealers but took them a week to diagnose(Their diagnostic was to just keep car untill it would'nt start one day) Crank sensor went again 2 weeks ago. Did a paperclip test and code 19 came up. Did it myself this time wih guide on this forum, not a bad job at all if you remove the wipers and scuttle cover. Took a couple of hours in the dark on driveway to change. Re-routed away from exhaust and oilpipes. So  Keeping fingers crossed now as this is the third sensor. Noticed oil leaking down the back of engine near sensor so guess cam cover gaskets need doing. Had them done by garage about 18 months ago but no ideal if breathers were cleaned Am going to do it myself this time.
James the Glos mobile mechanic has just done Timing belt for me. Can thoroughly recommend him. He is first class on these cars.

What make you say the crank sensor is on the way out?.

Code 19 is crank sensor fault.

Omega General Help / Re: Engine stalled at trafficlights
« on: 04 October 2008, 17:04:24 »
Hi again,
Did paperclip check and code 19 came up. Its exactly 12 months tomorrow that crank sensor was replaced by main stealer. Car is starting at present but know it is only a matter of time. At least i got a warning or two this time. Gona have a go at it myself this time and try new cable routing as described here. This is the third sensor since my ownership (4 years). Their mechanics would do well to join this forum but would probably get the sack for doing too good a job.
Where's the best site to get a Sensor from?
Cam belt was last changed about 42K ago, so guess thats due around now?
Thanks for replies and ideals

Omega General Help / Engine stalled at trafficlights
« on: 02 October 2008, 00:31:05 »
Hi,
Car has been running great since crankshaft sensor replaced 8/9 months ago by main dealer. Then today car has stalled 2or3 times when at idle or moving slowly. You hear a sort of Knock from engine as it shuts down. It does start again after some prolonged use of the starter and again you hear a knock from the engine when she fires up ( like a solenoid opening)
Any ideals please? Surely it can't be the crankshaft sensor again. Have not checked the sensor wire routing used by dealers!
I will try the paperclip test tomorrow after work. What code would i be looking for if it is sensor?
Thanks guys in anticipation.

Omega General Help / Re: coolant :(
« on: 02 May 2008, 17:25:24 »
This is just an alternative thought to consider. I had what i thought looked like  steam coming out from the drivers side of bonnet back in a cold spell. When i opened bonnet i couldn't see anything but it smelt hot & oily.
Turned out to be a slight oil leak from rocker cover seals finding its way on to the hot exhaust. But it sure looked like steam coming from under the bonnet in the cold morning air.
Worth further investigation unless you are obviously losing coolant?

:)Hi, Got car back from main dealers and gotta say well done to all you guys who were convinced it was the crankshaft sensor. I have given it a good few runs since  picking her up Tuesday.
Car apparently failed to start friday PM and Saturday morning and Technician( who i think took it on as a personal challenge) diagnosed crank sensor. Changed it out and its been going ever since. I still haven't got my confidence back in her just yet , but its looking up
Surprisingly they didn't take me to the cleaners with the bill. They did a tech 2 diagnostic + providing and fitting the sensor and a free health check £146.00.
Not bad sice they had the car for nearly a week. Either that or they could see the despair in my face when i took it in.
Anyway they put a note on the health check comments " clicking noise from underneath rear of car when applying brakes" But did not elaborate as to what it might be. But thats another post.
Thanks again guys for the positive comments and getting the crank sensor right. It certainly helped me a lot after a month trying to sort it out.
Regards

Thanks again Guys, All good positive advice. Interesting point about the Chip in key fob. Both keys have been dropped regularly, well worth checking this out.
Thanks James in Cheltenham may take you up on your offer if Baylis don't deliver and i still have some dosh left.
The old crankshaft sensor keeps rearing its ugly head and i think i will have a go at that after Main dealers speak to me on Tuesday. Be interested to know the preferred route of cable?
Thanks for MAF info, At least something can be eliminated
Will post any update Tuesday after speaking to main dealers.(They are checking & holding car hoping she will fail to start and replicate fault)
Many thanks all.

Thanks Guys for replies. I have not personally done the paperclip test but it is in with the main Vauxhall dealer as we speak and i am pretty sure they have put it on their diagnostics kit. I phoned them yesterday for an update and as the car is running they have found no faults. They are asking me for more symptons ie did the eng management light come on. No. Car either starts or not. When running it does not stall, missfire or give any sign things are amiss. They like you also suspect the crankshaft sensor( which was replaced in December 06) or the air flow valve. Are there any tests on these items to eliminate them?. One thing i would like to mention is that before petrol pump was diagnosed as cause of starting problem back christmas time. it used to start first time on the button. After new pump fitted it takes 2 to 3 turns of the starter to get going and sometimes you get a knock as she tries to fire. I suspected fuel system maybe not pressurised but not sure.Anyway when car wouldn't start  recentlyi connected a simple timing light up and there was no spark. I will update you when i hear back from main dealer tuesday. In the meantime i apreciate your input.

 Hi Guys'
Nice to meet you all. Good to find out there is some dedicated practical experience out there.
This problem has been giving me grief for over a month now. When car does go you would never think there was a problem, no funny noises, missing, nothing, goes like a dream. Then she will just not start. Have called breakdown. They usually take about 2 hours to turn up then miraculously she starts straight away as soon as he opens the bonnet. Crankshaft sensor was replaced December 18th 2006 due to separate non starting period which turned out to be the fuel pump. This was renewed in January 2007.
This last week car refused to start all week. No spark. He couldn't start it either.Car was towed to the local main dealer. Breakdown mechanic suggested immobilisor problem with key fobs not reading code?Apparently only the main dealers can deal with this.
Guess what, car started first time next morning and they cannot find anything wrong. They are keeping it in for observation! Your comments greatly appreciated.

Nice one James, Us miggy owners need a mechanic who doesn't have a panic attack when you tell em its an omega.
I Was going to pm you recently to see if you could do my cam belt but saw you had injured your ribs.
So have been looking for Cam locking kit on e-gay to have a go myself. Very relieved to see you have decided to do it for a living.
Have looked at the website and like the prices. Know from the all the comments on the forum that you are held in high esteem by the members.
I will contact you through your website to arrange.
