The only display message was the auto gearbox when it went into limp mode, I also get a coolant warning but have had that for nearly two years

Ok have been having stalling issues for sometime now, 1999 omega, 2ltr 16v CDX A

Today was the worse day normally it will stall and then restart and run fine till the next time. Today however Stalled 11 times coming out of a multi car park twice on the down ramp. Then the Auto gearbox went. Normally fuse number 9 but it is fine. Then stalled everytime i took my foot off the throttle, till the battery died! Now parked up awaiting tow. Any ideas ?

I'd say the smoke was either from the instrument cluster, the fuse box, or possibly (because of the timing of the smoke) the auto transmission module which lives in the same sort of area.

You'll only know when you start to investigate behind the dash...

Ok i have the auto box back working it is just the instruments that don't light up. I will ma\ybe get round to taking the dash out in the spring in better weather  :-/

Thank you everyone for your help and advice so far.

Update the car is now running without the power sounder unit. Now this doesn't appear to be what was on fire.

I have still got no instrument illumination?  :(

All fuses have been checked and are all intact. Any ideas?
Does anyone now if there would be a relay for this anywhere?

Have you checked all the fuses are intact?

Whilst the power sounder can cause a fire and, unless recently replaced, is certainly better off out of the car than installed in it, if you had smoke from under the dash, then something under the dash was burning. This may or may not have been related to the power sounder (the wiring from it may have overheated) but it certainly merits an inspection of the wiring under the dash.

If a fuse has gone it's a good indication what circuit might have been at fault.

In any case, disconnecting the battery doesn't "reset" an Omega ECU in any sense. They have non-volatile memory.

Kevin

Well in the meantime we have disconnected the battary mainly to cut the circuit of power incase it sparks off another fire. We have decided to pull that power sounder off the car we are going to do the dash tomorrow. I am starting to wish i had never bought the car  :-/
Cannot access power sounder by removing dash....

I know it says that on an earlier post i have even been given the link on how to do that.

Does no-one ever read the threads from the beginning around here ;)

I need to remove the dash to see what else is burned out with it. I have no instrument illumination it has all gone. I also have a warning stating "Automatic gearbox" when i start the car up. It is also in "Limp home mode"

ok do i have to take the dash apart to get to the 'power sounder' or can i just remove the instrument panel?

Sorry for asking so many questions but i have only had this car three weeks.  :(

The power sounder lives here..... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1220198611 and if you feel you want to have a go at replacing the internal batteries then that guide is here ..... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1240077701  :y

Ok so why would this cause smoke within the car and not outside the car and why would this cause me to lose all the instrument illumination?

Andyb you said it may have taken something else with it on an earlier post any ideas as to what may have gone with it?

.... then on the right hand side of the dash there was smoke and a burning smell of rubber or plastic.  ......

The 'power sounder' ie the battery back up alarm siren, lives under the plastic scuttle on the driver's side of the car. It's not unheard of for them to set on fire. It does sound like yours has burnt out, perhaps taking something else out with it.

This being the case wouldn't the alarm be silent when disconnected from the battary? Because it isn't it still sounds when we disconnect the battary  :-/

Any other ideas what it could be? I will rip the dash out if i have to be i would rather not :(

The clue was in the description ....... battery & back up  ;) ;) ;) :y :y

Thanks just read that in the drivers manual  :D

Next question and this one is a bit harder.  :'(

Stopped the car and put the gearshift in park then all the dash lights failed. All of them. then on the right hand side of the dash there was smoke and a burning smell of rubber or plastic. when i went to start the engine again it came up with a automatic transmission fault and went into limp home mode. Any ideas as to what could have been burning?
