okay....we all know i am the social outcast  ::)

MV6 had usual rust spots, it annoyed me immensly. Wanted also a newer car but couldnt find the MV6/Elite that I wanted. Decided to go elsewhere as I got the FSH Jag Sport for A LOT less than you may think.

My sale had nothing to do with costs - obviously runnning an AWD Jag-Deo.

Just replaced wifes 2.5 CDX Facelift - with a clit 182Sport.

Again its newer and for her town only runs it actually saves money. She is sitting on 37mpg today from it, and it still does a 0-60 time in under 7 seconds.

I hang my head  :-[

...But admit i still miss the MV6 despite the Jag doing nothing wrong, having stunning acceleration and great looks ( matter of opinion i know)

But the power goes to the wrong wheels....... and its French!!  :o

Tunnie - you are forgetting some people do slightly more than you 20m round trip to Bicester every day...

Diesels generally start to cost in (if buying new) from around 18k per year - that figure will usually be lower if buying 2nd hand.

Sadly not, I worked out that even by taking a company car in diseasel format, it would not pay off

Seem to recall that depreciation aside, I would save 1600 quid a year with a diseasel when doing 20K miles per annum.....and thats without depreciation!

Saving just £1.6k?  :o

Better off to LPG!
£1.6k saving a year is not to be cast aside - we're not all young, carefree, with a roof provided by parents ;)

There are valid reasons not to lpg...

Ok so i go out and buy a new oil burner, prob need to pay around 10k for something nice.

Saving 1.6k a year on fuel doing 20k miles a year, going to take 6 years at least to get your 10k investment back.

Then you got to take in depreciation... which will nudge £1k/500 a year..

So saving say £1k a year?

Retail service costs...

There is money to save no doubt but its hardly going to be big money! Have trouble getting anything near 4 figures...
Your maths dont add up.  When replacing a car, the petrol varient will still be around £7-8k, so the diesel pays for itself (on fuel alone) in less than 2yrs...

Not thinking about that, talking about people selling their Omegas for oil burners, compared with keeping the Omega, rather than buying another petrol car...

i think you'll find very few doing that (or if they are, downsizing).  I guess many just want a change, and consider diesels as part of that

Petrol is the new Diesel. These new particle trap wee powder superclean Diesels get pants milage.  Same pence/mile with direct injection petrol!

tax alone will be £300 a year cheaper, insurance about £200 cheaper per year (£350 cheaper for this renewal coming up), general running costs will be cheaper, and even fuel will be cheaper!

I guess we can all argue about pounds here and there and, depending on personal circumstances, that can be a critical issue. But my Omega is a passion. In the bad times people will still spend money on non-essentials, just to make life a wee bit more bearable, whether it be meals out, the cinema, golf, footie or whatever. For me, my Omega is my non-essential indulgence. I don't need to justify it. I bought it with my heart and my heart wants me to keep it. I will for as long as I can.  :y

Personally, still looking for a high spec, late model, 3.2 estate in black and happy to pay a fair price for a good example.  Dont give a toss about the tax increase or the fuel costs.

Value of the car and its comfort outweighs the other costs, to my mind....

According to the main point of the governments change in road tax levies is "the environment" Work it out for yourself what creates the larger carbon footprint? someone who runs a larger engined car keeps it well maintained and keeps it on the road for years, or buys a brand new low emission  car with the related" carbon cost "of production. It aint rocket science!
While we are on the subject of carbon footprint (you've got me going now)
Take the case of the parents that have three children they cant afford foreign holidays so the buy a caravan and holiday in this country. They need a large car to tow the van but are going to be penalised. Compare there carbon footprint with that of the family that jet off abroad. This tax is only going to clobber the less well off >:(

Hmm cars, well when I was unemployed for a while I kept my car on the road, and didn't even think of selling - good job too!

However I went for banger with big engine, and rebuilt the car with repair panels.

THen simply due to a 3 day wait for a throttle cable we needed a newer car, my wifes father at the time worked in a Vauxhall garage and liked them, she suggested a Nova , then Astra - I said I wasn't down trading, she knew I used to deliver Vauxhalls so I went for the smallest cheapest option available.

Rules

RWD
I like them
Engine good

Ended up with E reg 2.0 GLi Carlton when I was on rubbish wages
