Trouble is, although the Japanese episode demostrated how safe nuclear is, the media went for the sensationalist hype bullshit. This means the masses are anti nuclear

actually, didn't the Japanese thing show just how safe nuclear power is ? I mean after an earthquake, tsunami and major is-handling, there was still a relatively small level of contamination, etc. No-one died. That sounds like a good advert to me.

I think that's what TB is saying - to the educated (few, it seems) it's a great advert for the safety of nuclear power..

But all you see in the 'news' are sensationalist headlines along the lines of "OMG NOOCLEAR RADIATION MAKES PART OF JAPAN UNINHABITABLE!" and so on.. (alright, I exaggerate.. but all you see in the news are "it's been a giant disaster" reports)

That was my very point.

The installation was hit with an earthquake, double the size of the maximum it was designed to sustain, and still shut down properly and promptly.  It was then hit with a rather large wave, 3 (?) times larger than it was designed to sustain, still it stood.

The largest single factor was the emegency generators transported to site (as the onsite ones were trashed, and the batteries only had limited run time) were incompatible, and it was at this stage the overheating issues started to happen, hence the controlled explosions...
