actually, didn't the Japanese thing show just how safe nuclear power is ? I mean after an earthquake, tsunami and major is-handling, there was still a relatively small level of contamination, etc. No-one died. That sounds like a good advert to me.
That was my very point.
The installation was hit with an earthquake, double the size of the maximum it was designed to sustain, and still shut down properly and promptly. It was then hit with a rather large wave, 3 (?) times larger than it was designed to sustain, still it stood.
The largest single factor was the emegency generators transported to site (as the onsite ones were trashed, and the batteries only had limited run time) were incompatible, and it was at this stage the overheating issues started to happen, hence the controlled explosions...
