Another one bites the dust.
« on: 06 March 2012, 09:56:54 »

Going along in my TD last night, 30mph 5th gear then all I heard was a really loud click and the engine just died. I had to get towed home, It wont even turn over. I've only had it a week as well :( Can only think the chain has gone, somethings jammed it, or oil pump pickup etc. Either way I'm betting it's a full rebuild which I cant afford and it's far too good to scrap.

Think if the chain has done, your probably going to hear more than a loud click?, when you say wont turn over, is it dead, starter turns but wont start, Battery, Lights etc.

Might be worth a second opinion before you decide to scrap it.

Even if the engine is Kaput, they are available on ebay. There is one on there at the minute at 99p with no bids.
It is out of a BMW 325, so full power, however, it is in Troon.

Started stripping it today, the engines well seized but the cause unknown. chain is still on the cam but the cam doesnt spin, it doesnt turn over in reverse either. Gonna take the head off tomorrow and that will probably answer my questions. I won't scrap it i've seen how much parts go for on ebay. Gutted though :(

This is how it is at the moment and there's no indication at all as to what the problem is. It's as if something has jammed the chain.

I saw that last night it's on my watch list, only needs an injector

Can you turn the Crank?, fowards or backwards? if no, is there any play or slight movement.

Worth taking off the starter motor just in case the pinion has got stuck in the ring gear?

Might be worth taking the chain off before you remove the Head, to see if the camshaft moves or its a seized crank?.

Made some progress got my mate to come and lend a hand with pushing it. The cam and crank now move freely and the chains are unobstructed. It will turn forwards and backwards BUT my theory is once one of the pistons hits the top it locks up. It only seems to be one cylinder, the inlet valves look ok. I'm going to take the exhaust manifold off tomorrow and see what state the valves are in, I'm expecting to see a snapped head on cyl 3 or 4.

If so does anyone know a supplier for valves and a head set? cant find nothing on eBay. and I have no idea about taking the chain off as i've never done one before.

Ello
have you done the chains yet the following info may help as i have done mine twice in the last few days.

Disconnect the battery

Remove viscouse fan (Left hand Thread 32mm spanner) good sharp smack will shift it.
**Optional but gives more room Drain and Remove radiator and cowling.
Remove front of AC tensioner pulley if fitted and release tension on belt 13mm spanner remove AC belt
Release tensioner roller on aux belt remove belt
** Next to alternator looking down around the cam sprocket are 5 10mm bolts and one stud/nut double nut the stud and remove it if this comes out you will not have to remove the head.
Using 22mm socket on main pulley set at TDC turning engine clockwise only (No1 cylinder on compression and cam lobes at 10/2
Lock crank at TDC using special tool in flywheel (11.8mm rod with 8mm tip fitted through access hole below starter motor.
**Check crank is locked by rocking crank back and forth if it moves at all it is not locked**
remove 5 bolts around front of camshaft cylinder head housing (2 are very long at the back of the housing) you should have already removed the stud as above.
remove AC compressor if fitted and place to one side (leave pipework attached they are flexi)May have to remove hose clamp on turbo hose frome below) 3 13mm bolts
remove AC compressor bracket 6 13mm bolts
Remove alternator mounting bolts and move aside (mine was a bitch and had to keep moving it to get access 2 13mm bolts
remove power steering pump and bracket as one unit 2 13mm bolts on engine and 2 on front plate.
Remove water pump 4 10mm bolts use 2 of the bolts in the threaded holes to jack the pump off
remove thermostat housing (optional)
remove water feed pipe below thermostat housing 1 10mm bolt
Starting at bottom right corner of timing chain cover remove 7 10mm bolts
starting at bottom right of timing chain cover remove 8 10mm bolts
Drain sump if not already done
remove 5 sump bolts around front sump/timing chain cover
Slacken but do not remove remaining sump bolts(releases pressure on chain cover)
you should now be able to prise the chain cover off.
hope this is of use.
cheers BD
