I'd wondered about that - but how fast would it empty them?

Many years ago I took my kids up to the Kielder Water project which was deemed a white elephant - not the case today of course. They even did Kielder Safaris by landrover with food hampers. Bet all that has gone now as the supply of water to Manchester (presumably) is in full flow

The pipework is easy, but pumping the water is more challenging ;)

We do it with Natural gas (at 85 BAR) :o and Leccy. Can't see water presenting any insurmountable problems, other than getting the lazy utility companies to invest instead of resting on their laurels while denying customers the product they've paid for.

Not very, and it's nice soft water, good for car washing. You'd need to filter it as crud in the water won't do a Karcher much  good.

However, I have a feeling you can't even use water you've collected in this manner during a hosepipe ban.

Wouldn't surprise me!

I remember the company who installed my driveway had an (expensive) sump system they could install under the drive - 'permeable' blocks on sand with a filter membrane draining into a sump at the lowest point via another filter, the sump then had an installed pump and a standpipe available next to it.. all designed with car washing in mind.

I was too tight to have all that lot installed, though, so my drive runs off to a soakaway  :-[ Garage roof, on the other hand, could be directed via a couple of (large) water butts..

you can use water youve collected however you like Kevin.Just cant connect a hose to your taps. :y
Karcher runs ok off water butts as long as they are raised a bit,or quite full, otherwise you run into problems through lack of pressure to run it.

Actually Albs, I just went and read the South East Water definitions, and they seem to specifically ban using a hose attached to a water butt..

Quote
Hosepipe: drawing water through hosepipe from a container, filling or partly filling a container by a means of hosepipe.

They do, however, have an exemption under car washing:

Quote
Specific low water use apparatus, such as pressure washers

So it looks like you can wash your car with a pressure washer, but not a regular hose.. regardless of where you draw the water from.

When scotland build the wall of independence we will be paying them for the water , salmons not stupid  :-\ Recycle the bath water and wash the car  ;D

IF and it is a bif If then we should ask for the settlement money back from 300 years ago. With interest it is very approx £900 BILLION. That should stop them in their tracks!!

This really annoys me, Southampton has loads of water, and rainfall. We pipe our water to Portsmouth, and now we even pipe it to to the Isle of Wight. The water company announced it a year or so ago about how proud they where and getting this pipe in on time and budget. Now Southampton gets a hose pipe ban because where supplying everyone else.
Portsmouth I can understand as they don't have room for a resovoir, but the Isle of Wight, Most of the western half of the island is devoid of any life, why the heck could they not have a resovoir. Surely it would have been cheaper to build than an underwater pipeline.

Well, I will use my hose as and when I want to, danglies to them.

Indeed, the presence of Kielder Water means that it is highly unlikely that we would ever have a hosepipe ban in the North East.

And you southern lot can keep your beady eyes off it.  Go and dam up your own valley somewhere!  There must be lots of places in the South that would look better under 100ft of water.
