Well , it could only happen here ...... ::)
The five roads in and out of town have had large coloured and expensive looking permanent roadside signs erected pleading that we " Don't be a waster " and that we should conserve water .
We're fed from two Lochs back up in the mountains behind and are all very wary when it rains for long periods , which it fookin' does , as we expect to replicate the scene in towering inferno when they over flow. To overcome this difficulty the man that owns , yes owns the lochs , dumps the excess into the drain and ditch network that runs from there down to here and then down into the bay  I've got two 18" dia concrete drains submerged down each side of my land and they can struggle after two or three days of rain and that wee niaff playing with his valves .
My front lawn  is like a quagmire 'cause the ground just can't absorb anymore and it's on a steep gradient ...!
A plague of genital warts on the gobshite that signed off that order for the roadsigns and Danny Bob with his run off valves..... >:(

Having mused over building my own self-sustainable house in the tropics (have a guess where!) I have stumbled upon various methods of reusing grey water (from sinks/showers/washing machines) in the garden.  If you use the correct soap this grey water is full of nitrates and perfect for not just watering but also fertilising the garden, or in my intended case the vegetable patch.

To send all this water from our homes back down the drains and then use fresh drinking water full of chloramines (rather orrid stuff used instead of chlorine) to water the roses is just criminal.  A very simple and inexpensive change in house design in the building phase would help make our homes more future proof and put less strain on the drainage system thus reducing waterboard costs which could go into shareholder dividends reducing customer bills.

My plumber moved house a while back and last time I saw him was looking at installing a water reclamation 'plant' in his new (very old) house for grey water & rain water..

Apparently the rules and regulations (planning, building regs, rules on how much water you're allowed to store as a percentage of what falls on your property, what you can use it for) were considerably non trivial to the point he was starting to wonder if it was worth the trouble..
